Weird question, but I started in January (Spring semester) And i took a summer break, And iS tart classes again in late august. I'm confused on when I will be an official sophomore. Will it be in Jan. or after or what?
I appreciate any help that anyone can give me.
Thanks :)

Usually that’s determined based on the number of hours completed.

I assume you’ll be a freshman still since you’ve only taken one semesters worth of classes. Do you have any APs under your belt? As above poster said, class standing is determined by credits.

Do you mean for academic purposes or social ones? For academic ones, as everyone said, it’s determined by credits. But for social ones, go with whichever you feel you are. I would suppose you feel like a sophomore since you’ve taken a summer break since entering college. You could also go by your graduation year for this social determination.

I technically became a sophomore in February of my first year, since I had early standing. People in my school usually continue to refer to themselves as freshman throughout their first year, sophomore throughout their second, etc. even if their technical status changes and even if they decide to graduate early. They’ll say things like “I’m a junior, but I’ll be graduating this spring.” Since I didn’t decide to graduate early, It’s usually a non-issue for me to describe myself as (last year) a junior. It only matters when I’m talking to a professor or administrator who hasn’t met me but has seen my profile which lists my year as 4 and they ask me about my post-graduation plans. Once they understand my situation, they refer to me as a junior as well. Like, on the board where my department has pictures of all the majors, I’m with the 3rd years.
