Sophomore slump. How bad is this?

I received my grades this morning.

Foreign Language 2nd level: A-
Biology: B
Biology Lab: B
Orgo: A-
Orgo Lab: A-

I was fine with these grades until I saw my GPA. I was really disappointed.

Soph. GPA: 3.45
BCMP: 3.38

Freshmn GPA: 3.7
BCMP: 3.5

Overall GPA: 3.62
BCMP: 3.44

Am I still running for medical school admission? How bad is this?

Average GPA for matriculated students for med school is about 3.6. So your about average.

I had a sophomore slump, too. It certainly didn't torpedo my chances for medical school. I did a lot better junior year - for whatever reason, I got myself into gear and started doing better than freshman or sophomore years.

Don't let this get you down, but keep in mind that you're now in the "average range" for accepted medical students. Sliding down any further will make getting in a lot more challenging.

My first semester sophomore year was the worst too (3.5 overall, 3.5 science) and I ended up graduating with a 3.9+ GPA. I think the key is not to focus on the numbers (and your numbers certainly aren't terrible) but rather to make changes that will result in higher grades. For me, it meant to stop going out so much and to start studying more than 1-2 days for midterms. Those habits had worked freshman year but not so much sophomore year.
