Okay, I just got my AP scores and found out that my college courses that I took in high school will probably transfer.

So I have:
AP--
Chem 5 credits
Comp Sci 6
Calc 8
US Govt 4

College--
Japanese 8
Calc III 4
Diff Eq 3
Java Prog 3
Java Web Devlop 3
(I'm guessing Calc II won't transfer since I already get AP credit)

So thats 44 credits. Is 32 the requirement for sophomore standing? What real benefits do I get? My principal told me that usually the higher your status, the earlier you get to register for classes.

BTW, it hasn't been verified that the college credits will transfer as is. They just told me that they will most likely accept them. Anyone have experience with this? I'm really excited, but after I hear back from UMich, I'll have to rearrange my schedule.

I'm also in a similar situation to kmatzen, I have 35+credits to transfer from a local college....

You get to register a little earlier, and once you get past 60 you have to start paying a higher tuition rate. There's no real benefit to having "sophomore status", as in nothing magical happens when you go from 31 to 32. If you're planning on staying all 4 years, you might want to tell them to ignore AP credit for subjects you're never going to take again, because it's basically dead credit that will just push you up into the higher tuition bracket faster.

Won't it allow you to finish a double major faster? And can you choose which courses you transfer? If so, do they count the GPA into your MIch gpa or is it another one?

I was thinking about doing the Engineering Global Leadership honors program. Does anyone here have experience with this program and would advise me to do or not to do this program? If I can do this then does this sophomore standing mean I can probably finish a bachelor's and master's in 4 years or should I just have 5 easier years?

If you get credit for something like, say, AP english and you're going into engineering, all the AP english credit will do is act as elective credit, you can't put it towards any kind of requirement. If you want to leave early or won't have as much time for electives because of a double major, then they might be helpful.

are you sure its 32 credits for sophmore standing? When I was at orientation, my advisor told me that as long as I get 4/5 on my 2 AP's, add that credit with the 2 other AP's i got 5's on, and take 13 credits 1st sem, i would have sohpmore standing 2nd sem. Thats only 29 credits =)

Actually I believe sophomore standing is 30 credits. (its 30 year times 4 years giving you the 120 you need to graduate). And personally, transfering credits did not do anything for me (except math got me out of calc 1 and 2). So unless you're credits are going towards a prerequisite or a requirement (like foreign language), there really is no point of them (except increasing tution!). Also, ap credits will not count towards your distribution requirements..so that kind of sucks.
