sophomore standing?

i heard that MIT grants sophomore standing to some students after first semester frosh year.... does anyone know how many credits do you need to do this, or how many people generally take advantage of this?

they try not to put a hard number on now many credits you must have, only say that you must've completed 1/4th of a degree program, but that boils down to ~96 (2 48-units terms) numbers have climbed since second-term frosh went on grades/nr (they used to have p/nr both semesters, back in the day) and are fluctuating around 100, from what i can tell, doing a quick browse through old Techs.

I've never heard of this, but if you're smart enough... anything is possible!

.....being smart enough doesn't have lots to do with it. you can get max 54 of those units your first term, and the rest will come from credits given for advanced standing exams, ap exams, or transfer credit, if you've taken college courses during high school. most people manage to have at least some credit coming in, tho not that many have gobs and gobs. it's not that obscure, or at least, everyone i know was aware of the option, even if they weren't eligible.

yeah you need 96. Each AP "general" credit (from humanities) is worth 9, and AP math/sciences are worth 12 each. Note that placing out of classes via placement exams is also worth 12 each!

I was told (by a friend who is at MIT) that you couldn't do this....maybe I'm wrong? I know you can take a bunch of credits and graduate early...

um, i did it. so did several of my friends. i suspect someone's confused.

lol yeah, goddess is right

im probably confused. sorry!

dont forget, you also have to take a ci-h your first semester to get offered sophomore standing.

what's ci-h?

A communications intensive HASS

awesome, thanks! =)

I took the sophomore standing option. Not because of any desire to graduate early, but because I really despise the freshman credit limits. It's important, however, to realize that once you take sophomore standing, you aren't on A-B-C/No Record grading for the spring term.

Of course, if you don't plan on getting D's or failing, it shouldn't make a difference...

we don't have to do 2 HASSes in the 1st semester to get early soph standing? Just 1 CI-H will suffice?

Hey guys, it's all documented -

If you have sufficient amount of MIT credit units, the Associate Dean of Academic Resources and Programming may offer you sophomore status at the end of your first semester.

most things are documented somewhere. people ask questions about obviously-answerable topics b/c they're too dumb or too lazy to look it up, or they aren't parsing the available info properly, or they want to know about the gap between policy and practice. we answer them b/c we're bored, and telling people to rtfm (or webpage, in this case) is generally seen as rude, for some reason.

ah well... sorry :o

Well, to be fair, people who don't yet go to MIT may find the webpage somewhat daunting. You do have to sort of know where to look in order to find relevant information, and that takes a modicum of familiarity with the way web.mit.edu is set up.
