sophomore transfer to UNC Chapel Hill

Im currently a freshmen at another UNC system school but want to transfer to chapel hill next year. Here are my stats

HS GPA: 2.7
SAT: 1140
College GPA: 4.0
Extracurriculars/ Honors: Eagle Scout, Licensed Private Pilot, SCUBA Diver, Founder and President of the Aviation Club at my university, club sports, habitat for humanity, tutor.
Essays: Strong
Rec. Letters: Strong, from both professors and community members

Im re-taking the SAT in a month, from the practice tests ive taken so far im expecting a score in the range of 1350-1450. I know that after only a year of work at another college carolina still looks heavily at your high school performance, however my grades as of now are perfect and should not change before I send off my application.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Anyone in a similar situation as me?

Thanks

Just show them you belong there. Your grades should be okay despite the fact that you only have one semester to show. Make sure your essays stand out, and you should be fine. Good luck.

BTW. I am in a very similar situation. My high school GPa was a bit higher than yours. No college grades available yet, but I’m acing all of my quizes and assignments so far

I will have a 3.0 HS GPA. But Im taking my SATs this Semester and January. A 4.0 looks very strong. Just write a solid transfer essay and you should be fine. I’ll be doing the same thing for Boston College in the future.

Do ya’ll think I have a shot? non-tradtional urm student

4.0 gpa 30 credits by the time of application. 48 credits by the time I transfer.

2.8 hs gpa
1440/2400 sat (should I retake?

ecs
president of psychology club
president of phi theta kappa
peer mentoring group

OrsonSwells,

Sophomore transfer or Junior transfer??

No your SATs are fine, just don’t aim for Ivy Leagues – save them for graduate school.

Where are you going to apply to?

Mid sophomore transfer 48 credits

I’m applying to CAS. Other schools I’m applying to include NYU, USC GWU, U Miami, Vanderbilt, Binghamto, Stony Brook, Cornell (doesn’t look at SAT).

ps you really think I could get away with a 960 sat?

orson - you should be good at stony brook and binghamton

What about Vandy and Cornell? These are my top two choices

i cant speak for vandy, but for cornell it’s mostly based on your essays. your stats are obviously good since you have a 4.0, but you’ll need to use the essays to prove that you belong there. if you can write solid essays, then you’ll definitely have a shot.

Stonybrook and Binghamton is your best shot, he’s right. HOWEVER, you still have a chance at your other schools. Don’t let anyone put you down Orson, just write a good essay and have strong recommendation from your professors. NYU is more competitive than freshmen admissions, but they have a high transfer rate like Cornell. (Cornell is a gauranteed transfer unlike other ivies.) USC is a stretch, you’re in the back of the line. GWU – decent shot, my brother didn’t do well in college and he ended up transferring to the GWU Law School after he got a 3.6 at Seton Hall Law. UMiami is a good shot also. And as for Vandy, which is more competitive than Cornell and GWU, you’ll be facing applicants at the NYU-level. I can’t chance you in for sure, you’ll just have to see after you apply.

Get other schools down as well-- BU could be a def. reach.

If you’re unsatisfied with your SAT score, take it one more time. So colleges will have something to superscore.
