Hey, I know I need some prerequisites . I have completed all of them except for calculus. I am currently at glendale community college CA. I will have completed College Algebra by the end of the 2016 spring semester. Before I can do that I have to take regular Algebra in the winter which doesn’t give me any credit. So as you can tell my math skills arent very good. The USC transfer prerequisites say I need to take calculus. Do I manditorily have to take it at a CC or do I have a chance of getting accepted and taking it at USC?
Hello there. USC is pretty lax when it comes to math - they let you transfer after only taking intermediate algebra (which as you said, usually doesn’t transfer for any credit). That’s something that the UC’s and other schools can’t say. I’m not the sharpest at math, so I only transferred with a course in statistics. I was going to say you definitely have a strong chance of being admitted if your GPA and other stats were up to par, but if you’re planning to major in business, you may not initially get in for that without some kind of calc course. I remember transfers from two years even took something called “business calc” and it immediately got them rejected for business related majors at the UC’s because it was apparently the “wrong” kind of calc, but they managed to get into USC just fine. Is there any way that you could take something like that? Maybe it would be less intensive? Other than that though, you could definitely try for other majors that don’t place such an emphasis on math and maybe try to switch into business after you’ve been admitted?
Definelty, I want to transfer ASAP because I don’t want to apply with the low GPA I will probably get if I stay. changing my major would definitely be something I would do if I know for sure that I can change my major to business in the future.
Are you a sophomore or freshman?
I am a freshman
An international student from the 2014 application cycle was admitted outside of the Annenberg school and was told by someone at USC (I believe she said a pretty high ranking admin) that she would have absolutely no problems switching into the journalism major/school. I would think the same would apply to Marshall, but they probably have some set rules - for instance, maintaining a B average in some introductory business courses. I also believe this was the case before a student was allowed to declare a certain computer science major - he had to have a B average in introductory courses. I still haven’t started at USC myself (although, I have enrolled in my spring courses), but they seem surprisingly relaxed about switching schools and courses. Except maybe for engineering. I wanted to take an engineering course when another co-requisite would basically kill my schedule, but was told that was not at all possible - I had to be an engineering student
I have all A’s for my fall semester but for the winter session I am probably going to get a C in college algebra and a B in anthropology. Do you think that USC will regect me after having accepted me when they see that I got that grade.
