sophomore transfer where to live?!?

I'm a sophomore transfer for fall 2012. Where should I live? I'm a female and do not want to be completely surrounded by freshman. I also don't know anyone there so looking for a place to make friends!

I suggest College Houses, Inc. which is a line of co-ops in West Campus. The oldest being Pearl Street and 21st Street. There are all sorts, however.

[College Houses Cooperatives: Student Owned and Student Run](http://collegehouses.org/)

I moved to a co-op after a year of on-campus housing. This is the cheapest and most social way to go if you want down-to-earth and crazy fun friends! Apply ahead of time too.

I would not suggest a co-op. If you are willing to become friends with freshmen, then maybe living in a dorm would be a great place to start!

I am currently a sophomore and I live in West campus. A lot of sophomores live at the Block, the Texan Pearl, and other apartments in west campus.

Oi, what more are you wondering about?

It’s pretty easy to find an place to live around campus.

Dorms: I would suggest them solely for the purpose of waking up 5 minutes before class and being able to make it on time. Otherwise, do not do it. Plenty of silly rules (past freshmen year, it seems very constricting; while they are very safe and generally clean) and you share a box room for $7-8,000 and your roommate pays the same.

Other options, aparthments - complexes galore in and around the surrounding areas: area codes 78705, 78706. You could share a duplex or house with people. Just look around or find a real estate agent or drive around. Simple, very simple. You can find anything from a dingy hole in the wall for dirt cheap to a palace for a pretty penny or two.

I still back the co-ops because it’s the biggest bang for your buck and they have all sorts of differences. There’s studious co-ops and party co-ops and the ones in between. Free internet, utilities, swimming pool (Pearl), and an industrial sized kitchen with 15 meals/week. It’s an old and continuously growing part of Austin and they exist all around the country.

Yep. There it is in a nutshell.

Housing. nbd

Do you still experience college life at UT the same way if you live in an apartment? I feel like it would be just you going to class and going back home everyday. Like is it a far walk from the school? I went to Austin a few weeks ago, but I just crashed at my friend’s dorm rooms. Everything was super closed and I liked that.

But I don’t wanna live in a dorm if it’s very restrictive.

EDIT: I just looked at the Co-Op thing. THAT LOOKS SO COOOOL. Is it hard to get a spot if you’re a transfer student that gains admission to the school late? I won’t be admitted until May… >_<

Co-ops are commonly known as “hippie housing” and usually smell weird. I wouldn’t recommend living in them unless you tour it first to make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Dorms are great, especially if your’e a freshman. I see it as a right of passage.

If you don’t want to be completely surrounded by freshmen, check out private dorms. I live in Dobie and there are people from all years on my floor. It’s not the most social and it’s pretty quiet, which you may prefer since you’re not a freshman anymore, but you can still meet people in close proximity, it’s closer to campus than any apartments and you can get a suite and meet 3 new people right off the back. The other popular private dorm is the Castilian.

You don’t have to be “surrounded by freshman” just because you’re living in a dorm. I’m a sophomore and I live in Jester, so technically I am surrounded by freshman, but I keep my interactions with them to a minimum. I know my neighbors by name, but I don’t hang out with them or anything. No one on my floor really hangs out anyway… I don’t know how social other floors are. My point is that you can live on campus and still have your social life take place outside of the dorm. It wouldn’t be any better living off campus anyway… I hear that people rarely know their apartment neighbors.

I’ve never heard of them being “commonly known as hippy housing.” That’s hearsay. humbug! haha

It wouldn’t hurt to apply now. Contracts go out starting in March for new members. They don’t check for admission until mid semester once you’re living there. No worries!

They’re all really different and some contain more hippies than others. It’s a reflection of UT’s student population anyways. We have the occasional conservative anyways. I know him! Sticks out like a sore thumb, but he’s happy! xD

I’ve been living at one for nine months now. The people are so varied. One thing we do have in common is that we’re all going to college or for ICC college or working. So it’s not bums to expect like others would wrongly imply.

And at least where I am it’s pretty social. I know if I was in a fix, there’d always be somebody there to help me. We’re like a family. Or a tribe almost.

I wouldn’t consider an apartment until I wanted my own confined space with little to no socializing. It’s not like you can’t have friends living in one, but don’t expect it to be easy around where you live!

Oh! If you decide to stay on campus, stay in Moore-Hill. Lots of sophomores live there and it’s pretty social.

how are the private dorms? do many sophomores live there? are they disgusting?

The sophomores are TOTALLY disgusting. Yuck, don’t go near them. I mean you’re twenty feet away from them just going on your usual day to class and dang, get a whiff of that sophomore! Ranky green waves oozing out of 'em!!

xD

Nah, the rooms are not ‘disgusting’ per se. It depends on what kind of roommate you get. Anywhere from clean freak to previous landfill resident.

I don’t know about the sophomore to freshman ratio but freshman have to be the greater population. I for one am a current off-campus resident.

Yep.
