i'm considering transferring (i'm a freshman) and i was wondering if anyone had advice on whether it would be better to transfer as a sophomore or as a junior? i've read a lot of posts here and the opinion seems to be split.
my background (if it makes any difference): i had a really good HS gpa (3.95 UW/4.4 W) & ok test scores (2150). i just got my midterm grades and i have around a 3.9/4.0 for first semester so far.
any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Well, the first question I would ask is: where are you trying to transfer into?

As a sophomore transfer, if you weren't at least competitive for the school when applying as a freshmen, it's very unlikely you'd be competitive at all as a sophomore transfer. If you think that you had a good shot but just got unlucky, then it might be a good option to try again.

I would recommend junior transfer for schools that you may not have been a competitive application as a high school student.

i was thinking about northwestern mostly, and brown. i was waitlisted at both last year as a hs student....

the letter i got from northwestern implied that people who had been waitlisted had a higher transfer acceptance rate but i don't know if that's true or not.

so i guess i should try to transfer for fall '09 then?

I'd try to transfer as sophomore. I think it'd be better for you socially and mentally (to get it over with sooner; it's not fun to have one more year of yearning to be in another school if you know you really want to get out).

-nods- Given your school choice (particularly NU), I think you should go for it sophomore year.

thanks for the help!! i'm about 70% sure i want to transfer right now so i'm going to give it some more time and decide over thanksgiving break.

I'd recommend transferring for sophomore year. My S transferred to a new college his sophomore year. His only regret is that he didn't transfer sooner.
