Sophomore wanting to go to top universities..SAT score assessment!

Hi everyone,
I took the June SAT as a sophomore (my first time) and this is what I got.
730 CR
730 M
760 WR (70 MC, 12 Essay)
College of my choice is Harvard, if not Stanford or Yale.
Do you think my score is good, or should I retake it as a junior? I know I could probably get 800 on Math...
What do you guys think?

There is absolutly no reason to not take it again. In fact, I suggest you take it once in junior year and once in senior year. That certainly is a good score for a sophomore, but it is average in the eyes of the ivies. Though a 2400 cannot gurantee admission to ivies, it will certainly make things much easier.

If you can improve your math to a 800 and improve the WR by 20 or so points it'd be a lot easier on the eye...

Hi im in the same boat as you! Though I think I really could have done better.
CR 730
M 740
W 730 mc 72, essay 10.
Im a soph and wanna go to top unis too hahaha.

If you feel you can get an 800 on math then by all means go for it. A 70 point boost from a 2120 is pretty huge.

The scores you got won't be the deciding factor if you get rejected from a top uni, they are all like above the 95th percentile. If you want it still cost effective to retake ($41 for SAT and you get to send 4 score reports which usually costs $9.50 per school).

If you think you can improve, then retake the test by all means. I'm in the same boat as you, a sophomore (rising junior) looking to go to top universities. You've got my SAT score beat, though (700 CR, 710 M, 720 W). I'm definitely retaking the 2130, hoping for a 2300 eventually with enough studying.

There are a lot of people who believe that once you hit 2200 or 2250 or [whatever they themselves scored] the SAT becomes a non-factor. This is not true in the least bit. You should absolutely retake it, because with more studying you will do better, and the higher your SAT score the higher your chances of admission. Arguments like "99th percentile says enough" and "there are more important factors" are just asinine.

I've gotten into this argument on tons of threads before, and so here's my proof that SAT scores matter even among 99th percentile scores:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1060058125-post11.html

I posted this a while ago in response to a "should I retake with a 2290." You'll have to endure the typos, though. My favorite is where I add 1/5 and 2/5 to make 5/5 :)

You and I are basically in the same boat right now. I took the June SAT as a Sophomore too and scored 2210, and you can be damn sure I'm going to retake it in October.

I would retake it, regardless of what grade I was in. Because of your Ivy aspirations, you should try to break 2300.

Godfatherbob, I agree but also disagree with you. I think that the difference between a 2200 and 2300 SAT score is significant on an app, and breaking 2200 does not make your score become a non-factor. I would put that "glass ceiling" at 2300 (or a 1500 between reading and math).

SAT scores are more of a watermark for schools, I think (or at least I hope). If you make a certain score, admissions officers can move on to your ecs and essays and use those to base your admission on. If your scores are low, you need ecs and a killer essay to compensate for it. If your scores are high, then you're a stronger candidate.

Scores aren't everything. If you can't make a cetain score, do something else to strengthen your app instead. Honestly, there are very few who can truely claim to be slam-dunks at the top schools. But everything helps.

Interesting view point. I guess, but I think working on a science research project is more beneficial than 50 SAT points, especially if you qualify for ISEF.

wow ok, im feeling pretty stupid right now lol

lets say im not a genius like the others that just posted with scores like 2200...

whats a reasonably good score for a sophomore?

Not sure - but as long as you didn't use a calculator to find their score out of 2400 you should be okay.

Since you're a sophomore you can take it as many times as you want.

Get a job, which is good for your app, and use the money to pay for your SAT test

If you're just a sophomore, then feel free to retake to try and raise that CR or M, though I doubt it'll make a -huge- lot of difference. Didn't app to Harvard so I don't want to give misleading information, but if you feel like you could do -significantly- better, then give it a shot.

Financial Reasons. Laziness. I could go on and on.

Btw, I'd stick with it. But whatever you want.

I'm one of those people who believes that after you get past 700 in each category, your scores won't keep you out of any college.

Be sure to take the PSAT as a junior so you can qualify for National Merit.
