Hey everyone. I am a sophomore who wants to go to UCB to study psychology or molecular biology. (havent decided) My first semester grades were 3.8 (weighted w/ two weighted honors classes). I know that is horrible. I did not work hard at all during the first semester. I wish I could take it back.

But anyway, what is the lowest GPA that would almost gaurantee acceptance in UC Berkeley? What is also the lowest SAT score that would make Berkeley a good match? How many extra curriculars should I have that I have invested a lot of time in?

P.S. The reason I am worried all of a sudden is because my dad told me I would not get it, and that UC Davis would be a reach. I kinda got mad. =(

You'll have a good shot with 2200+ SAT I, 750+ SAT IIs and a GPA which places you in the top 5% in your class. How have other kids in your school faired (how many apply to Cal and how many get in?)? Take as many AP/community college classes as possible and try to put at least some effort into your personal statement. I don't think psychology and MCB are impacted majors, but don't quote me because I too am a Cal hopeful.

Well, in a way psych is. You have to take a certain amount of classes from various categories in a list and essentially must achieve above a 3.2.

DRab:
Well, in terms of freshman admission, if you mark Psychology as a major, it won't affect your standing right? But later on, when you actually become a Psychology major, there's another admissions process?

sqwe3k:
As far as I know, an impacted major is a major that is harder to be admitted into, e.g. Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS.) There are a lot of people who apply for that major, with only so much space, so it's much more difficult to get into Berkeley in that department, hence "impacted." I could be wrong, though, so someone correct me if I gave a bad explanation.

I see. The College of Letters and Science sounds interesting. Sorry if this might be a dumb question, but is that small liberal arts college on the UC Berkeley campus? It says it is located here...

201 Campbell Hall, Berkeley, CA

Is that near the campus? Or even better... on it?

Do you guys think that getting a 4.3 weighted GPA for 10th and 11th grade gives me a good chance at Berkeley (Considering I have the ECs, SAT scores, and volunteer hours). Im worried about the GPA because I screwed up first semester so far. =/

Haha. Before I say anything, keep in mind that I don't attend Cal (but I am hopeful...,) but my brother did, I've been there once, and I've researched a lot. So my information may be flawed...

From what I can ascertain, Berkeley, like many other universities, is made up of different colleges, but they're not literally different colleges. They're all on campus, but they're just different departments, separated by what curriculum they teach, e.g. the College of Engineering, or the College of Chemistry. DRab, I know you attend Cal; that's how it works, right?

unnecessarily hot, you got it, in both how impacted majors work with admissions in L and S, and the college system, which seems to be all over the country (as it is at Cal).
