i'm currently planning out my next semester at my CC, but i'm sorta stuck as to what to do. i'm nearly done with my pre-reqs and IGETC, as a transfer as UC English major. so i have one english class, a chem class, and am planning to take a psych class as a psych minor. i was wondering would it harm my transfer chances if i took a random filler class (since i don't know what else i could do)? like, socio, anthro, or another small-small lit class? even if those classes didn't transfer to the UC level?

I asked this question a day ago rofl.

oh, woops. damn. i’ve sort of been skipping over threads that are irrelephant to me, so i must have missed yours while doing that. sorry! thanks XD

edit: in any English major’s opinion: for my fourth missing class slot, should i take a shakespeare study class? even when it’s not transferable?

whatever you do decide to do, make sure u can atleast get a B in the class…

i’m considering taking my spanish class pre-req that i need for my major (if i can get in the class) - but i’m a little worried about getting a C in that class 'cause… well. even with my four years of spanish back in high school - i haven’t worked with spanish formally in the past year… so i’m a little tentative and worried about that… so while i know i need Bs in my classes - i’m concerned over that.

well, i think one C wouldnt kill you, but you definitely need to do outstanding in all your other classes to offset a C. i know kids who were taking some filler classes…and then they FAILED resulting in both of their admissions to be revoked.

I did this and got a B in a 4 unit class. Which in the grand scheme of things didn’t matter but it really irked me. I lowered my GPA slightly for nothing and it COULD have been the ifference between acceptance and rejection,

If youre really just kicking tires, or are interested in the subject here’s waht you do.

Take the class Pass/No Pass

Cupertinotransfer’s question was a markedly different one. I stand by my answer in that thread for various reasons. This is a great website, but now that i’ve been through the process (got accepted to every UC some out of state schools and a couple of Ivys) I see how on a lot of the little questions like these the advice is subpar and flat out wrong.

I think i’ll stay on this site for the next batch of transfers and play devils advocate. There are usually more than one answer to a lot of the questions asked.

But yes. Pass/ no pass. credit/nocredit, or whatever they call it at your school.

@redoplease - it’s just the GPA i’m concerned over, if anything, for a C in my prereq Spanish class. i’m fairly certain and secure enough that i won’t botch it up completely enough to fail suddenly a couple of classes. not to appear arrogant or anything - but i know myself to not do that. or, a professor screws me over at the end - which can happen.

@MortimerC - i hadn’t even THOUGHT about that route… it would certainly help. so the pass/no pass (and all other variations) would be recommended for filler-nontransferable classes in your opinion, yeah? 'cause that would put a sort of different light on…well. that fourth random class i’m taking just to be full-time (possibly shakespeare or a speech class for CSU). and i agree - this forum is fantastic, if not without its caveats, so i appreciate that.
