So course selection just started for me and I need some advice on if I should change anything in next year’s schedule.
This is my schedule right now:
AP Comp Sci
AP Physics 1
Honors Algebra 2
Honors Bio
Honors ELA 1
Honors Geography
Honors Spanish 3
I have around a 3.75-3.8 unweighted due to mainly my geography grade (no one has a an A in the class and I go to one of the top schools in a competitive state). I’m also taking a test to skip out of chem 1 and get the credits for that class.
Sophomore Schedule:
AP Chem*
AP Bio*
AP Spanish 4/AP Psychology/AP Physics 2 (I don’t what to do since I’m not good at spanish and I have a b+, but I know that 4 years of a foreign language is recommended to go to top 10 schools)
Honors ELA
Honors Precalculus
“Honors” Algorithms and Data Structures (this is a beyond ap level course that my school offers for exceptional students in comp sci)
Health and Speech (this is a required course to graduate)
*both chem and bio won’t be difficult for me due to studying for uil, science bowl, and olympiads
That’s a really strong set of courses! Honestly, if you don’t want to put in the effort for Spanish, it’s not really necessary. I don’t think there are many colleges that require a full 4 years. If you’ve completed through Spanish 3 at the honors level, you’re fine. Especially since you’re clearly solid in everything else, a foreign language class that won’t even be a focus in college will not make nor break your application. I’m a junior and I have some really smart and hardworking friends who quit Spanish/French to take more electives, and I have no doubt that they’ll get into top schools.
I hate to be like this but I guess I’ll only take spanish 4 if its fairly easy. Spanish 3 honor sat our school is supposed to be extremely hard in preparation for spanish 4.
If you’re aiming for top schools and had the possibility of taking Spanish sophomore year, but don’t, it’ll be a negative. So, take AP Spanish and be done with it (for high school - remember that many colleges also have a foreign language requirement for their students, so that the morebou take in hs, the less you have to take in college.) Basically you need to meet their requirements in all five core subjects unless you have a compelling reason not to.
Taking AP bio and AP chemistry together isn’t recommended, but if you’re preparing international Olympiads in these subjects your situation 's different.
Your schedule is missing a social science, will you take it over the summer?
