Sororities at Duke

My daughter is applying for admission to Duke in the fall and is concerned about sororities on campus. It seems like more than 40% of women are in a sorority. She loves the academic programs, student life and campus but may not be interested in joining Greek Life. She would still like to attend frat parties and have a social life. Is it possible to have a social life and be happy at Duke without joining a sorority? I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

If you’re a girl, getting into frat parties shouldn’t be a problem.

@lmb123, my daughter is a rising sophomore at Duke. If you would have asked me a year ago if she would join a sorority, I would say 0 chance; it seemed like a ridiculous prospect. And yet she did end up joining one and is happy. There are different types of sororities: some are more traditional, with high stakes recruitment; others are multi-racial and laid back. So, your daughter may want to consider a sorority or selective living group. Regardless, my daughter has many close friends who aren’t in a sorority, and they are also very happy and have good social lives.

@lmb123 Although TheTab can be extremely superficial at time with many articles being in your face prestige whoring, some articles are actually interesting and worth a read. Here’s one on Duke’s Greek culture if it helps you in any way:
