Sororities at USC?

Hi all,
I was wondering what the sororities are like at USC? Is it really hard to get into one? Do they haze you?

Tracee

Sororities at USC are a really big deal. Half the time I feel like everyone on campus is in a freakin sorority or fraternity. (I'm not...I rushed, but it wasn't for me....lots of my friends are in sororities though) The sorority girls can get a bit obnoxious though, and they tend to look down on people who aren't in the Greek system. (I asked one of my sorority friends why one time, and she said that it wasn't that they look down on non-Greeks, it is that they don't understand why some people wouldn't want to be in sororities)

As for how hard it is to get into a sorority at USC, rush is really competitive. I think I remember hearing a statistic though that most girls (like 90%) that rush do get in a sorority. If you want to get in, just make sure to look really nice and be able to have 100 asinine, totally dull conversations a day during rush.

I don't think any of the sororities haze anymore, some of the frats do, but I haven't ever heard of a sorority doing anything.

Good luck!

Trojangirlie05, I know what you mean about how it seems like everyone is in a sorority (but don't worry, I'm not in one!). I rushed also, but let's just say the combination of 700 girls trying to get into 9 sororities and the fact that I'm either shy or not myself on a first meeting is not a good combo.

tracee- each sorority is different, and I think that anyone could find a match. I've had friends who rushed just because and were definitely not the Greek type, and then fell in love with their sorority.

If anything, sororities do the opposite of hazing. You are going to get tons of gifts! My friends in sororities say they wish they were a pledge again so that they can be so spoiled.

700 girls rush? That sounds totally intimidating. I asked because my mom was in a sorority at USC and she has been talking about me rushing non-stop since I applied to USC. She was an Adpi. What is that house like?

I keep telling my mom that I still have to get into USC, then a sorority, but....well, everyone has parents.

Your mom is already pushing you into a sorority? She needs to cool it. I mean, sure, IF you get in, you should rush to see if it is even for you, but don't throw away your senior year in high school thinking about rush. I just don't get these crazed sorority alum moms. (No offense :-)

As for ADPi, I think they are probably the coolest sorority on the row. I have several friends in that house. The girls in that house are really laid back and not stuck up at all. They are big partiers too. Their house is really pretty. If I was going to join a sorority, this is the one I would want to join, so tell your mom not to worry.

Gamma Phi Beta is a pretty cool house too, again just laid back girls that know how to have fun.

AXO is the smallest sorority at SC, they don't do many social events with frat.

Your stereotypical sororities (blonde, ditsy, eating disorders) would be Kappa, Pi Phi, and DG. That isn't to say there aren't some nice girls in those houses, but just on average, you meet some real "winners" from those houses.

I don't really know many people in Alpha Phi, Tri Delt, or Theta. Theta is a good house, you don't ever really hear anything about the other two.

When, and if, you get to USC, don't worry too much about all of this though...just go with your gut, and if rush isn't your thing, don't be afraid to drop out. There is a world outside the Greek system.

tracee- if your mom was in ADPI at USC, and you get in at USC and rush, there's a huge chance you'll get in to ADPI, because of your legacy. I agree with trojangirlie about ADPI. I actually rushed but did awful at it, and that was the one I wanted to get in. They are not all beautiful, they aren't all stuck up, they aren't all stereotypical sorority girls. They are really nice and down-to-earth. They aren't generally seen as the "coolest" sorority on the Row, but they are the most normal.

Trojangirlie was correct with her summaries of the houses. Here are the general views of the sororities here (remember, this doesn't go for every girl in the house) basically in order of their generally viewed "coolness" (as viewed by frats and the girls themselves of course :) ):
-Pi Phi- "the top sorority"; they are seriously all gorgeous, most are blonde, and in general shallow.
-DG- pretty much the most popular one for girls wanting to get in; I don't think they are as stereotypical as these other two
-Kappa- "the rich house"; stereotypically the wealthiest girls are in it, but basically they are very pretty
-Kappa Alpha Theta- One of the top ones; but the girls seem to be nicer than others
-Tri Delt- "the slutty girls"; that's their reputation, but the funny thing is that this friend of mine rushed this year- really religious, really nice- and joined TriDelt, so who knows....
Alpha Phi- I love these girls. Many of these girls are gorgeous, but every girl I know in the house is sooooo nice, fun, and just great in general.
-Gamma Phi Beta- laid-back
-AXO- is less involved socially than other houses
-ADPi- used to be seen as "the fat house", but I think it's changing; as said above, the most normal, nice girls out there.

I'm sure you will find a house that's a perfect fit (whether or not it's ADPi, and wheather or not it's at USC), but if not, I've met many great girls at USC that are not in the Greek system.

wow. you seem to know a lot about greek life at USC. do you know anything about the fraternities?

I either know guys in various fraternities or have partied at various fraternities. I can give you the "stereotypes" if you'd like.

haha ok. i would appreciate that. thanks

Hello all,

I would like to tell potential new members, such as the first poster, to not let your judgements be clouded by what other people may say about the chapters. Sorority recruitment is a wonderful way for USC students to find a group of friends on campus, and going in with perceived stereotypes in no way achieves this goal. Second of all, every single chapter at USC has amazingly bright, talented leaders among their membership, and not one chapter can be pigeonholed into the stereotypes that they have been placed in here.

For more information on the USC Greek system, feel free to visit www.uscpanhellenic.com.

tracee- listen to socalrush. I was just giving you the general stereotypes, and as I mentioned, definitely not everyone falls into them. I know brilliant girls in every house. Everyone I know who rushed wanted to know a general opinion of the sororities before rushing (even though we weren't supposed to), so I just wanted to try and pass on what I learned as a freshman, as well as what I've garnered since.

Easttowest- if you go into the older section of this website, you will find long convos on fraternities. I'll see if I can find a link.

If you go to the bottom of the page and click college discussion archive, there are two places you can go for info. 1) go to message search on the left side and click in USC fraternities in the college life section, and scroll down and you'll see a discussion on it, and 2) go to the individual college section, then to USC, then to Social Life, and there's more there.

ok thanks for the help.
