Sororities at USC

Hi, I'm curious, does anyone know what sorority recruitment is like at USC? I've heard it's rather competitive, but does that mean in terms of looks, academics, all of the above? And does anyone know what some reputations for the houses are? Thanks!

hey cupofcoffee

I’m a guy so I’m not the best source of information on this topic but I spent a lot of time with my girlfriend while she went through the rush process. Basically, different houses look for different things and “top tier” houses are most competitive with a huge focus on looks and general interaction with other girls in the house. A lot of the houses also request a letter of recommendation (preferably from someone in the house). Just make sure you’re looking your best, know some people in the house, and interact well with the actives  Good Luck!

There are ten NPC sororities at SC. Many of these chapters have been on campus for over 75 years. Also, there are service sororities and multicultural sororities.
Membership in the ten NPC sororities is by mutual selection through a process now known as recruitment. At SC recruitment is competitive. It is a good idea to have references by sorority alumnae as the first recruitment parties are short. Imagine having to learn the names of 600-700 women in a brief period of time.
Last year quota for the chapters was 64 new members. Since numbers are so large the chapters can change in a short period. Two pledge classes can change a house. It is best to read the websites of each chapter, visit the houses during recruitment and make the best choice for YOU. Just as in choosing colleges find a chapter that is a good fit. My advice is to find your “own” home. Membership is for a lifetime.
Do have a frank discussion with your parents or guardians on costs. Make certain the costs fit into the family budget BEFORE accepting a bid.
Here is a link to an excellent information page from another college about joining and the entire process: [Why Join? - Case Office of Greek Life](<a href=“Division of Student Affairs | Case Western Reserve University”>Division of Student Affairs | Case Western Reserve University)

Thanks for the help! Another question, and i know this really seems sort of silly and specific, but does anyone know if you carry purses during USC rush, and if so if you take them into the houses? I’ve heard at alot of schools you don’t, but i don’t know if i should worry about finding nice handbags to coordinate with outfits or anything like that. Again, thanks!

Handbags are held for you by the Rush Counselor who accompanies each group of potential new members down the row as you go from chapter to chapter. Also, no cell phones are allowed to be carried into the houses during recruitment parties. Your handbags will not be seen by any chapter members.

Handy hint: Wear comfortable shoes/sandals. Bring a well worn pair of sandals or flip flops to wear between houses.
