Can anyone give me any insight into the sorority scene at IU. Is it a "must" for any social life or just another of many options.

the system for "rush" that they use seems incomprehensible and i'm told you must live in the houses for all the years you are a member; and that the arrangements are like a dormitory sleep away camp (with a dozen or more people to a room).

I thought at such a big school this might be a good way to go, a good way to connect with people, but the more I hear, not so sure.

Any info would be appreciated.
thanks

As an alum I am not too familiar with the current sorority scene, however I can comment on the living situations. The "dozen or more people to a room" applies to sleeping arrangements, for example some houses, such as the one I lived in, have large rooms with bunk beds that are just for sleeping, and then 2-4 in rooms with closets, dressers, desks, etc. for studying, dressing and hanging out. I visited the house last year and the basic arrangement was the same. Bathrooms would be communal in most houses. I do believe the rules may have relaxed for seniors living outside the house since I think most sororities now have more members than they can house at one time, but you'll have to check me on that.
