hey guys! i have seven questions about sororities vs. dorm life at USC (university of southern california) please help!

as a freshman at USC, is it better to rush a sorority or get into a dorm?

when you rush, is that before the school year?

after acceptance, where do you set up your things if you want to join a sorority?

do freshman live in the sorority houses?

do freshman who are rushing a sorority have to find dorms to live in during the process?

what if you don't have a dorm and you don't get any bids for sororities?

are there people who get denied from all sororities?

You can rush a sorority- but you don’t have the option of living in it during your freshman year- so you need to set up a dorm or other housing arrangements. Rush is during the first week of school- and I don’t know if anyone gets rejected from all sororities. As far as rushing there is a website that you can leave your information if you are interested in rushing- however that would be something that you would do late spring or early summer. There is alot of information that you are given during the admitted students day, Explore, and during Orientation. Look for posts by Georgia Girl- she is very knowledgeable about sororities- and USC in general. Good Luck!

USC has one of the strongest Panhellenic systems in California. There is a long tradition of Panhellenic on campus. Some of the chapters are close to 100 years old. Today ten groups on the row are part of the NPC, National Panhellenic Conference. In addition, there are Greek letter multicultural sororities, ethnic group sororities and service sororities. A freshman woman has various choices.
If you, after SC acceptance, have interest in the ten NPC chapters my first suggestion would be to call Panhellenic at SC and find out the costs of membership. After the first year it does cost less to live in one of the gorgeous sorority houses. However, the initial semester of membership involves chapter dues, national dues, jeweled badge, social fees, sorority meals and national magazine. These can add up. Have a frank discussion with parents or guardians and make certain these costs fit into the family budget.
It is necessary to sign up as early as possible after acceptance from SC for a dorm room and meal plan. Even though the chapter houses are large it is usually a member’s sophomore year before a new member is able to move into the house.
My opinion is a woman who is a motivated student, excels at time management and has good social skills may have a better chance to pledge a group as a freshman.
Recruitment takes place shortly after the beginning of the school year. If your daughter does pledge she will remain in a dorm until there is space in the chapter house. She will have plenty of notice when there is a room available.
Membership in a NPC sorority is for a lifetime. These are private organizations and membership is by mutual selection. The best way is to meet women in all the houses and keep an OPEN MIND. During recruitment most potential members seem to discover the chapter where they feel “at home” and find new friends who want them to be a sister.
