Sororities?

Hi! I know NOTHING about sororities, but I want to be in one. I hear there are "sorority girl" stereotypes. What are they? Are they true? What type of stuff do sororities do?

I'm a classy, beautiful, intelligent, vivacious african-american young lady devoted to helping diminish poverty. But I also kind of want to let loose and have fun. I definitely want to make friends and get out of my comfort zone. Which sorority can you see me in? :D

It depends, would you be joining the Divine 9 (majority African American pledges) or a regular sorority? I only know about the Divine 9…so here goes. There are 4 sororities and 5 fraternities. The Deltas, The SGRhos, The Zetas, and The AKAs. These sororities do throw parties and have fun (step competitions, etc.) But they’re known for being active in the community and volunteering. You may want to research the different organizations on your own but I can tell you the stereotypes of each. The Deltas are ghetto and fun, The SGRhos are smart and to themselves, The Zetas are chunky and country, and The AKAs are pretty and stuck up. Keep in mind these are stereotypes and not always founded. I hope I helped. Good luck!

If you’re interested in the NPC sororities, there are 26 organizations, although your campus will likely have significantly fewer than these.

The recruitment process is complicated and generally depends on your campus, although the general formula is that you register, attend ‘parties’ (skit, philanthropy, preference) and the chapter and PNM (you) will mutually select.

Sororities participate in recruitment, mixers with fraternities and other organizations, philanthropies (both their own and other organizations’), and are leaders on campus and in the community.

Stereotypes are generally very frowned upon in the NPC community, although each campus will have its own. There’s really no “Alpha Chi’s are always geeky and Gamma Phi’s are always athletic” when chapters vary across the country.

If you want more information, feel free to PM me. You can also look at the national panhellenic conference website for potential members [Sorority Life](http://www.thesororitylife.com/) or google GreekChat, which can also answer many recruitment and campus specific questions

Also keep in mind that as a non-white person it may be a little tricky to get into a sorority. I’m not saying everywhere is like that or that’s the way it should be, but I’ll drop a fair warning.

Whatever you do join an NPC sorority and go to all the events.
