Hey! This is from my older sister in a sorority who goes to UF now:
Joining a chapter is a great way to get involved on campus and make instant, lifelong friends. Dues vary by chapter, but you should receive the breakdown of each chapter’s dues during recruitment.
Recruitment is basically speed dating. You go from house to house and talk to the women in each one and decide where you feel most comfortable. There are 4 rounds. Round 1 which is 2 days and pretty casual. Panhellenic will provide you with a tshirt, and you can wear shorts or a casual skirt and sandals/flats. Round 2 will probably also be 2 days, and is a little dressier. Maybe wear a sundress or a cute shirt and top. Round 3 is probably going to be one day, but it could be two, and you’d dress like you would for a nice dinner. Some people wear heels or wedges, but you definitely don’t have to. Then preferentials (round 4) will also probably be one day (but again, it might be 2 this year) and it’s the dressiest of the week. Most people wear a cocktail dress and a lot of people wear heels, but again, you definitely don’t have to.
It’s long, hot, and tiring, but Panhellenic Recruitment is the best opportunity I’ve ever been awarded, and it’s opened so many doors for me. If you’re thinking about it at all, I would definitely do it. Worst case, if you don’t like it, you don’t have to join a chapter.
After recruitment, you have a new member period where you become acclimated with your chapter and the university. This is a great time to make friends and seek out involvement positions on campus, if that’s something you’re interested in. I highly recommend going to the house as much as possible - you get out of it what you put in!
There will be an orientation meeting to explain everything to you before recruitment starts, and there’s more information at ufpanhellenic.org, including a ballpark of dues and a link to the Pinterest board of some things to wear.
