does anyone know anything about greek life and how popular it is in cornell? does anyone know the personalities on each sorority?

hmm im in a sorority at cornell, where greel life is VERY popular, and since i am at work i have nada better to do than write you a detailed (and hopefully unbiased) list of cornell houses..... enjoy. :)

Delta Gamma- most often classfied as one of the best houses at cornell, def a top tier house. Lots of super pretty, blonde girls, there are some really pretty brunettes too (and ok a few questionable uglies, but not many) make up this house. All the girls i have gotten to know in dg have been really nice and cool when you get to know them. a few come off as stuck up, but from what i know they are pretty, sweet and classy and a great house.

Kappa Kappa Gamma- another top house, depending on who you ask it is the top house. Like dg has a lot of pretty girls, but is a little "rough around the edges" with a bit more wild rep. Kappas are really fun girls, even if i wouldn;t call them genuinely nice, i would say that they are fun to party with, entertaining to hang out with, and fab to borrow clothes from. :) Older girls ostentatiously wealthy, a continegent of jappy girls and wasps. the most recent pledge class seems a bit less rich, the cost of the cars in the parking lot have declined. basically, a great house to be a part of (hot), with a bit more wild/slutty rep but in a popular way. Frequently associated with Psi U

Theta - hmmm how to describe?? Theta is sort of a tough house to describe because there seems to be a big division of types of girls within the house. Not that they don't get along with each other (all the thetas i know seem to be very close with one another) but just that thetas either seem to be really pretty, fun, crazy girls, ORRRRR a random, semi ugly girl that you wouldn't have thought was in a sorority if it wasnt for her shirt. the spring '06 pledge class had more than its fair share of the normal, not-so hot girls, though the older grades are mostly very pretty. Sigma Pi loves them.

Pi Phi- Another hard house to describe.. This is sort of regarded as the athletic house, and true, several girls in each pledge class are on a varsity sports team. Historically a good house, with some genuinely hot girls in each pledge class, many pretty girls (and some uggos of course) Pi phi's are fun to hang out/party with. every pi phi i have met is pretty down to earth, and most all of them are cool, not ostentatiously wealthy like kappa but definitely there is a proportion of very well off girls. Hangs out with Phi Psi.

Alpha Phi- don't know a whole lot about them, sweet, popular and fun is their general rep, though there are some hideous alpha phi's. (i know i know there are some everywhere) most are good-looking, preppy, and cool. good house

AePhi- starting to become the new jappy ***** sorority. pretty jewish, and some non jewish girls, but being thin and toting mucho logos along with ever present black leggings and uggs are a requirement. if you are jewish, go for this becauseeeeeee

Sdt- IS DECLINING. was the best jewish house, but it's gotten kind of "eh" Of course there are still black leggings, letter sweatshirts, uggs and huge designer bags, so if you are jappy this is another top house for ya, dear. along with the possibility of unfortunate word play, the greek letters look like EAT, and it is easilyyyyy confused with sTd. its a decent house.

Alpha Chi Omega- jewish, but not a great house. its ok, but not great. mostly avrage girls, some quite wealthy but mostly average average girls. most are nice though.

TriDelt- umm a decent house, sluttier/trashier/more white trash than dg,kkg, piphi, theta or alpha phi but not bad. there are some nice pretty girls in ddd, and from what i hear from guys, people like to party with tri-delts. some really sweet genuinely cool girls in this house. its a mixed bag.

Kappa Delta- don't know a ton about them. nice girls, but with a portion of dyke-y athletic y girls. maybe taking over the athletic rep from pi phi? who knows. sweet girls though. physically, their actual house is ugly. green and white and yucko. this is still a step up from....

Alpha Xi Delta- they just colonized a few years ago so they are still pretty small. mostly average looking/ugly/ semi annoying girls that you see in class. the only ones i know i find to be insufferable. their house was very awkward at rush too. maybe the worst house on campus

aopi- have a beautiful new house on north campus, but that can't make up for the faces of the girls living in the house. most are ugly, hence "animals on parade". mean but mostly true. the thing that kills me about those girls is that some are very "im in a sorority so i'm better than you" despite the fact that they are not a good house. oh well. some are very nice girls, another house with less members than most of the other ones. maybe the worst? its def between axid and here.

okkkkkk i wrote a ton, and i realize this is an old thread so even if you dont see this, maybe someone rushing at cornell will. i would have wanted to read this when i rushed.. :)

Question....
what is "Rushing"?
is it a must to join soroities.....??
what are these stuff actually.??
thank you

what is "Rushing"? - rushing is what is now called Formal Recruitment, where girls who want to join a sorority visit all the sororities on a campus and meet and learn about all the houses. There is a mutual selection process between the girls and the sororities to determine who joins what sorority.

is it a must to join sororities- technically, no. There can be other ways (informal recruitment, COB, a new chapter colonizing) but 98% of the time you do need to participate in formal recruitment. esp at cornell

what are these stuff actually- i'd suggest searching online for more information about general sorority recruitment on google or something. they can probably give you a more clear definition, especially if you don't have some previous knowledge of this info.

hey princess8719!
thanks so much for all of the information! i have another question:
i'll be coming to cornell this january as a transfer student. i read on the panhellenic website that formal rush takes place during spring semester in january. does this mean that girls pledge during the fall?
ie: if i rushed in january, would i not become an official 'sister' until the fall semester? thanks!

princess8719- which sorority are you in?

This video about Cornell will tell you about frats, Greek life and more

If you are a January transfer than you can rush the second you get here. rush starts this year on the 16 of january? i think. (Check the cornell website) and you can rush, pledge and be a sister by april this coming spring'07 semester. Go to cornell.edu, search greek life and register for recruitment. i think its $28 and a small online form to fill it. you def dont have to wait for fall. :) see you in jan!!

what are the other sororities affiliated with (fraternity wise)? also how much time/how many days a week do pledge activities normally take place (on average)

It varies from fraternity to fraternity. You can basically consider it like an extra class, and like all classes, some are harder than others. Things that vary are: how often you will have to eat at the house, and how many weekly pledge events you will have, and how many events outside the house you will have to do as part of the pledge process.

im talking about sororities.. since thats what this thread is about

which sororities mix with which frats?

Sorority Pledging is not a big deal for most houses. it's mostly fun stuff, thats not mandatory if you have a prelim or a project. they're really fun though so go! Also you will start attending chapter and usually have dinner at the house on those nights. there's "pledge ed" type meetings where you learn about the history of the sorority and sort of get to know the other pledges. Probably 4 or 5 days out of the week you will have some type of sorority event to go to. It seems a bit overwhelming to some i guess, but when they tell you its as little or as much of a time commitment as you want, that is true. It is SO MUCH FUN though, so do as much as you can. :)

Other than the three i listed, i'm not sure which are the main houses they mix with. basically think that the top five sororities mix with the better frats/anyone they want, the middle mixes with middle coolness frats and the jewish ones mix with good houses and the jewish frats. the bottom ones...well i dont know who they mix with but i assume its with similar status fraternities.

princess, which frats do you consider to the best?

ranking the fraternities is more of an opinion question than the sororities i think.. maybe bc there are more of them idk. Plmok i was looking through your posts (i think it was you) and i saw how you ranked the frats, i mostly agree, but think the ones you listed as outside interest frats or whatever are top tier. anyway...

first tier
sae, alpha delt, psi u, sig pi, sig phi, phi psi, ato, chi psi

second tier
sig chi, du, theta drug, chi phi

for me, everyone else is lower tier idk. my rankings would be different i'm sure if i was in the one of the jewish sororities , as i dont really know anything about the historically jewish frats. i know way more about the sororities...so hope this helps sorry its not more informative.

princess, which house are you in?

Princess, you are truly pathetic.

sorry you feel that way precious. if you don't like it, don't read it. :)

what sorority are you in? ill ask since you ignored the last two people who did.

it's pretty obvious.
