how is greek life? could someone give a general run down of each sorority?

umm well greek life is not really that big at cal but from your screen name your from OC. Many girls from OC go into kappa kappa gamma or pi beta phi.

According to my sorority girl friends, they seem to all say all their sisters are very nice.

Most people are nice here. most.

about 12% of undergrads are in the Greek system.

I heard it's around 10%, so 12% sounds good.

From what I hear it's not a large part of campus life but if you're into that sort of thing it's definitely there for you.

When I came to Cal I would say that I was rabidly anti-sorority. I'm not sure why. Prejudice? Well, during my first semester I made 3 friends and theyre not really into going out much. Theyre all great, but I definitely was bored mostly. So I rushed during Spring semester.

Now Im in a great house that I LOVE. I couldnt be happier with my choice to rush. I adore my sisters and the fact that I always have something to do. I liked Berkeley without my sorority, but I LOVE it after rushing.

Of course, its a personal choice and I know some people arent as happy with it as I am. Still, I strongly recommend rushing.

Hey there,
Im not asian (im white russian-jewish--although really not religious) and i was wondering if there are any sororities that are not asian themed or only for asian cultures (cause thats wat it seemz like from wat ive seen) are there any that accept all races/religions? I saw a few that had girlz from law/politics buh im intrested in psychology. Are there any for me?
Also...on that note...if i were to be in a sorority..how does that work with the housing payments and stuff? Do you move into the house? or do you still live in ur dorm?
okay plez respond soon.
thankies

There are many sororities that are not Asian themed.

Try Delta? Everyone has.

Just do not join Delta Delta Delta. Bad rep.

Everythhing else seems okay and most frat/sorority people are 'cool.'

why does delta delta delta have a bad rep?

ok, well u know the slogan: try delta? everyone has.

AKA the girls are promiscuous and dirty

OCGirl: Don't let people try to dissuade you from joining a house based on a reputation. Find one you are happy with and get along with the girls best in. Don't join House B if you would be happier in House A.

It's Greek life: you can find out a lot through reputation.

For example some frats have hardcore initiations; others don't. Others are actually really dirty inside; some aren't; some are for "rich boys." It's all by word of mouth.

Of course, there are going to be sorority and fraternity stereotypes. But honestly, while it may seem like something you should learn before the recruitment period, if anything, it only brings more confusion and frustration to an already overwhelming process.

Some of the sorority stereotypes are simply old news - labels that were enforced long ago, and for some reason or another, never vanished completely. Some sororities have national stereotypes. Take the "Try Delta" slogan that was already rudely mentioned. Now, is it really, truly possible for every chapter of Delta Delta Delta to be exactly the same? I don't really think so. While national greek organizations hope to imbed a certain moral code within every college chapter, there's no possible way for every house to look and act in the same manner.

Sorority reputations change year to year. Every house has high times and low times. I've seen sororities rebuild from a significant slump, while I've witnessed other houses go through phases where they temporarily loose momentum and popularity.

The Greek community is very diverse at Cal, and I'm sure you will find this more and more true while you visit houses through formal recruitment. To clarify, there is no " true place" for OC residents. To suggest anything different would be insulting - not only to the greek community, but to students from Southern California that don't see the point in being placed into one giant lump. My sorority happens to have girls who hail from all parts of California - as well as different states (and countries). It's similar in other houses.

Sure, there are stereotypes. Some may be harmless (high percentage of blonds, lots of mass communication majors), but others can be hurtful, and can categorize every sister in one house as drug addicts, alcoholics, sluts, or antisocial snobs or prudes. However, while these viewpoints does not represent the house as a whole, I understand the need to feel at ease with what outsiders think of your sorority. This is why you need to go into recruitment with a desire to meet real, true friends, and not with the need to join a house with a certain stereotype.

In the end, it is YOU who will have to be a member of the house. You will be sharing meals with these women, relying on their intellect and good judgement come voting time, socializing with them on personal and public levels, and dealing with them on a day to day basis. So it's up to you to decide which stereotype you're down to live with and look past for the sake of friendship. While it may feel good to get a bid from xyz sorority because they're known as the "pretty and rich" house, just remember that once the pink poofy haze clears, you're a member of a family, and you've got to be able to truly love these women.

Good luck with recruitment if you decide to participate and I wish you all the best!
