sororities

Anyone know much about sororities at UGA? My D has just recently decided that she may be interested. Advice? Info?

I've heard it's twice as difficult to get into a sorority as it is to get into UGA itself.

The sorority recruitment process is a grueling week that most girls hate, but it's where you meet all the different sororities and try to figure out where you want to try to join. They have the process like down to a science though so if she's interested in sororities just have her sign up for rush and see what happens.

Does she have to have references and a "packet" in hand (with pics. etc.) to do that? I am completely clueless. We are meeting another mom today to get some advise and info.
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure most girls rely on recs with pics sent in beforehand written by alumni. Definitely talk to whoever you can on the process. It's extremely competitive so be prepared.

Meco's Mom -- My daughter is a sophomore and in a sorority at UGA. I was very neutral about her joining one because 1) they do "rush" before school starts (I thought going away to school was enough to deal with) and 2) I wasn't in a sorority and didn't and still don't totally "get it." That said, it's been a great experience for her and she is very happy with Greek life. Space10045 is correct, it is a grueling week and there will be tears, but there will be lots of joy too. It's a competitive week but almost everyone is offered a bid to a sorority. (For example, out of 2000 girls rushing only about 10 will be "mismatched"; they won't receive a bid primarily because their top choices didn't coincide with the sorority's choices.) The sororities that have been established a long time at UGA can be difficult to get into, primarily because there are many legacies (mom, sister, grandmother were members) Legacies have priority; a sorority is almost forced to take you. There are many good sororities at UGA and most girls quickly get a feel (during rush) for the ones they are comfortable with. How? I don't know, but somehow it works out.

She will need to submit a packet (contact UGA for info) and she does not need references ahead of time; however if she knows a sorority alumni (from any school) it doesn't hurt (and is probably a good idea) to go ahead get a reference now and submit with the packet. Also, she will need several dresses for rush, including a red one! (I think that is outlined in the packet.)

My daughter she is from out of state and knew no one. This was a quick way for her to instantly make a huge university smaller. Good Luck!

I am planning on rushing in August! Round one is the 13th and 14th. However, I have a very personal obligation on the 14th and i will be gone for about two hours that morning (from about 8-10)..what will happen if i miss this time in the second day of round one?

Meco's mom,
Thanks for the info. that helps a lot. How dressy should the dresses be? Long/short? Funky, cool, elegant?
Thanks,
Maleah's mom

Hello everyone! I was just wondering if someone could give me some info on the entire rush process. I am truly hoping to go through rush this fall. Also, I was wondering if anyone knows if being an African-American female will prevent me from being accepted by a sorority. That thought scares me a little.

I'm sure there are sororities for everyone. I don't think a sorority will discriminate because of a person's skin color; however, if there are sororities out there that do, then obviously they are not worth being in the sorority with.

very true patel. and bluemod i sent you a PM

I would suggest a dress that is "cool" to wear as it will probably be 100+ here that week. The girls either walk up and down Milledge Avenue to the different sororities or ride the busses that are provided. We live in Athens and love watching the girls that week. they seem to be outside a lot. Knee length dresses are very popular, solid, or flowery but the classic look seems to be the standard.

Thanks! That sounds perfect! It's just as hot here in Dallas. Used to it! :)

p.s. you should at least try to secure one rec for each sorority. thats a minimum!!! p.s. thats coming from panhellenic.

This should be your bible for rush:

http://www.uga.edu/panhellenic/forms/POINTER2008.pdf

maleah's mom - those are the kind of dresses you should wear. on the* ' What to Expect '* section it tells you exactly what to wear

Thanks so much!

what are the reputations of the houses? Is it very competative to recieve a bid from Tri Delt, Kappa, Pi Phi or AGD? (those are the one's I have rec's for). Is it as competative as U of Alabama?

you may have recs that you are unaware of...often alumni do not tell when we write them...= )

Let me first say this, I am junior, and in a sorority at UGA (and I will say it's been one of my best decisions!) Hope to help some of the questions posted here since I've done it all :)

rach001---Missing the second day of round one can be crucial. Round One is split up so ALL the potential new members (girls going through recruitment) can spend some time at each house. The first day of Round One you will be attending 11 sorority houses, and the second day of Round Two you will be attending 6 new/different houses (for a total of 17 houses). The second day of Round One will begin at 8am (ends at 11:15), so unfortunately you will be pretty much missing all the houses this day.

Maleahhpluvr---Most girls do wear lightweight tea length dresses (think Lilly Pulitzer style). It is miserably hot during recruitment and your daughter (who hopefully goes through rush :D) will definitely want to be comfortable. I'd wear flip-flops or flat sandals as the girls do have to walk quite a bit. Most importantly, I would suggest wearing clothing that expresses her own unique style!

bluemod---NO!! Race is not a factor at all for any of the sororities! Hope to meet you in August! :D

blondambition---Yes, the recruitment process can be competitive at ANY of the sororities. Throughout rush you will see smiles from ear to ear, laughing, and tears being shed. But, PLEASE come into rush with an open mind and don't be intimidated. I'm sure the first day of rush you will hear many different things about each sorority, but they are not necessarily true. I can't think of a single sorority that has a "bad" rep. When I went through rush, I thought I had my mind made up as to which sorority I would've liked to get a bid from, and I ended up choosing a different one (and wouldn't change a thing).

All in all, if you are even slightly interested in Greek life, try it! If you don't, you may regret it later. I loved everything about rush, and my decision with my sorority (and everything about it) to this day!! Hope I helped a bit!
