Sororities

Could someone "stereotype"/"characterize" the 5 sororities @ MIT for me?

If you're interested in a sorority, I'd wait to get information until sorority recruitment (which used to be during IAP of freshman year, but I thought I heard that this past year it was in the fall?). Due to the structure of recruitment, anyone who's interested in joining a sorority learns about all five sororities and meets sisters from all five. There are also Panhellenic recruitment counselors (temporarily deaffiliated sorority members) who guide potential members on the best sorority choice for them.

I think it's not terribly useful for us to stereotype sororities, particularly considering that anyone who's interested in pledging will have to investigate all five sororities during recruitment anyway.

the reason i ask is b/c the only sorority i got a chance to know during cpw was an uber-girly (i'm girly, just not this much) sorority that wasn't entirely my taste.

but i've heard that there are others that are less so, and i was wondering if this was true, and if so, which those were

and i ask now b/c i won't rush if they're all like the one i saw @ cpw, but i will rush if there are other options and my choice of wether or not to rush will effect where i choose to room. (housing lottery deadline before i rush week)

The point of Rush is that you get to meet the frat/sororities for yourself. FSILG Rush is done after Dorm rush, and around the same time classes start (a little before they start FSILG starts actually). You don't have much else to be doing with your time during that time anyway.

Plus a LOT of people participate in the beginning of rush. Free awesome food (often lobster dinners, etc, that you normally can't afford on a student budget for a week straight!), you have to be crazy not to jump for it.

Sorority recruitment has been moved back to the fall.

And yes, the sororities have different personalities - some more girly than others. Check out recruitment (free stuff and free food, nothing to lose) and see if you like a sorority =D

Wait...you know freshmen must live on campus, right? So you should go through dorm rush properly and pick the right dorm/room for you anyway. Whether or not you end up in a sorority later should not at all affect that. Unless I misunderstood what you said. =)

Ah, I didn't catch that part. In addition to what Laura said, most sororities don't have ALL members live in the house - there just isn't enough room (some sororities don't have houses). So you should still pick a dorm you really really like because you'll probably live there most of the time anyway =D. You could look into independent living groups as well. One is completely female (WILG - women's independent living group), and there are some cool ones like ET (coed, gorgeous house, etc).

sorry. that wasn't clear. i know that i have to live on campus.

basically, the reason i ask is b/c, if i rush, then i'll plan to get a lot of my social life from my sorority and not so much from my dorm, and i'll therefore consider some dorms that i LOVE their facilities but not so much the people.
on the other hand, if i don't rush, i'll have to live around ppl i love, even if i must walk 20-30 mins in the snow or in an older and grungier house.

Honestly, I think it's a poor choice to plan to not participate in dorm life, even if you rush. Plenty of sisters balance a relationship with their sorority and integrating into the dorm. There's absolutely no reason to become a ghost - not only is it detrimental to the dorm, but you'd really be missing out.

Bad idea. A terrific waste, too.

If you don't like the culture of a dorm, find one whose culture you DO like, and leave the spots in the others to people who actually want to live among those people in that culture.

Tons of sorority women socialize in both their sorority and their dorm.

Ditto. Horrible idea. Sucks for everyone. Trust us.

As a dorm REX chair for the second time, I beg of you- do dorm rush right. Please.
