Basic advice on sororities...how are they? Which ones are the best, in your opinion? How is the housing?

Well, rushing a sorority at Cal is usually pretty laid back though very time consuming. They can be fun to party with on your weekends, but being in a sorority can really narrow your scope of friends if your not careful. It requires a lot of time commitment and money, but most of my friends in sororities like it at least their freshman year (though some do depledge later on because they felt that being a sorority was a drag once they became upperclassman). Sorority may be marginally helpful in the future to establish connections (though nearly not as helpful as portrayed in Legally Blonde).

I really can’t recommend a sorority for you since I don’t know you so this is something you’ll really need to research for yourself.

I don’t know much about housing except that many sorority and fraternity houses on frat row are really old and not earthquake safe.

I was in a sorority my freshman year (though not at Cal, where having an actual frat row makes it a lot more legit) and I left it. I feel like it does narrow your circle of friends and in general limits the kind of people you hang out with. If you’re doing it for partying, at Cal, you don’t need to. Mostly everyone I know parties without going Greek.

Granted, you meet a LOT of people, but they are all generally the same kind of people, if that makes sense. Not that this is bad, but I wanted to meet people who were very different from each other because that’s what I wanted as a part of my college experience. Rush and see how you like the girls. But it’s definitely not for everyone.
