sororities

<p>can someone explain the different sororities at umd college park and the pledging for them?
thank you</p>

<p>I’d like that info as well…</p>

<p>alright, hopefully an actual member of a sorority is on here to give a better answer, but this is what i know so far:
We have a ton of different sororities, from like, a few multicultural ones, to the more traditional social Greek set up, with houses etc. And there’s also co-ed honors frats and such if thats another route you’re interested in, like i’m pledging Alpha Phi Omega which is a co-ed service frat, and it is SO MUCH fun.
Anyway, in terms of social sororities, i think there’s around 12, and they have a website [University</a> of Maryland Panhellenic Association](<a href=“http://www.marylandpha.com/#]University”>http://www.marylandpha.com/#) and then theres [Fraternity</a> & Sorority Life](<a href=“http://www.greek.umd.edu%5DFraternity”>http://www.greek.umd.edu) which is the office of greek life. So just poke around those if ur interested.
And my personal experience with the social sororities is that i did informal rush last fall as a freshman. My friend was really interested, I was compelled to look into it, and we both had enough credits (only 12 or 15) to rush, so we went through the process, which IS NOT like formal rush in the spring. In the fall, it consists of open houses, where you go, take a tour, talk with sisters, and just get a feel for each house you visit. You pick which house you go to, and then if they like you, they’ll invite you back to a invite-only party, and after that, they’ll offer a bid. And then, you go through usual pledging, etc.
I didn’t get any bids in the fall, and decided not to go through spring rush because i felt social greek would be a bit too much commitment. but from what i understand, spring is more structured, you visit each house, then list what you like, the houses rank you, and then there’s lots of different rounds until you are matched with a house. And I think more freshman girls go through spring rush.
And even though I didn’t end up pursuing spring rush, if you’re interested in social greek, i think you should totally go for it. There’s nothing to lose by rushing, and a ton to gain. All the girls i met were so friendly and seemed involved, and the greek community seems like a great way to make CP feel smaller.
And the houses all seem to be in a safe area, some are on frat row, and others are nearby, they’re all in the same neighborhood, really close to route 1 and school.
I only know acquaintances in the greek system, but they all seem to really enjoy it
Alright, I hope that helped, I know its not much since i’m not actually IN a sorority</p>
