I am debating joining a sorority at UMich if I decide to enroll. On one hand, I am a very serious student and not someone who totally loves to party. However, I also want to make a great group of friends right away. I was just wondering if any current or former UMich students in sororities had any great/okay/bad experiences!
Each sorority is different, however the rush process for sororities kind of forces you to interact with multiple houses and that can (in my opinion) lead to some toxic situations. Also, there are non-Panhel sororities (National Panhel, professional, Multicultural Greek Council, etc.).
Disclaimer: I am not in Greek Life, but have several friends involved in various ways, some heavily.
U of M is switching to winter recruitment, which means that if you will be a freshman during Fall 2019, you will not be able to undergo recruitment until the winter semester. If you decide to enroll, you will have all of fall semester to acclimate to class, social life, and make friends before deciding whether or not you want to join a sorority. As a member of a Panhellenic sorority, I have had a very positive experience. If you would like more information, feel free to message me!
@mahasw thanks so much for the info!! I’m glad you’ve had a positive experience!
I have loved being in a Panhellenic sorority at Michigan! Every chapter has a variety of girls: ones that like to go out frequently and ones that are more focused on academics and extracurriculars. But we all go to Michigan so the general attitude is that academics come first. If you do chose to rush, you will find your house and your group of friends within it! I have loved being a part of my chapter and would recommend rushing a sorority to any freshman girl at Michigan
