I was talking to my friend today and she said sororities don't have expensive funds and I always thought they did. I have always wanted to rush, does anyone have some valid info on how much joining a sorority and living in a house actually costs?

This will vary widely by school. Some schools have chapters with houses, some without, so that can be a factor, size of chapter is a factor, location of the school is a factor. It’s best to look on the greek life website for specific schools you are looking at.

Every school is different. Usually fees are higher at the beginning and decrease over time. It is also usually a bit cheaper to live in the sorority house vs. dorms- again, this may differ by school…you may or may not be required to purchase t-shirts, etc. for events. Usually mandatory clothing is included in your fees and others are optional.

Have either of you been in one? I’d just like to know how much they could potentially cost. So if either of you have been in one, how much was it your first year, if you’d tell me! Thanks for your comment though. Xoxo

It does vary school to school. For my D (who is currently in a sorority) the dues were a few hundred dollars, there are some incidental costs, and living in her sorority house is the same price as an on campus dorm. Usually during the rush process the sororities will go over the costs. In the meantime, I’d suggest you ask someone who is in a sorority at your school or perhaps contact the school’s Office of Sorority/Fraternity Life (most schools with sororities/frats have one) as those two sources would likely be able to provide a more accurate estimate for your particular school.

As an example, here is cost information for the sororities at the University of Michigan, but, like everyone has been saying, the costs will vary from school to school:

I hope this helps

???

are you asking if they have expensive DUES? or what?

expensive is in the mind of the beholder. For some, paying even lower-cost dues would be unaffordable.

How much do you think you could pay per month in addition to school costs?

keep in mind that dues are only one aspect of being in a sorority…not only are there other fees, but the social aspect costs a lot…dresses, t-shirts, events, etc.

Yes I meant dues, everyone else seemed to know what I meant. I appreciate you commenting on a lot of my posts, but you kind of make me feel bad about what I write.

My D is in a sorority and this past year ( freshman year) we paid about $1100 in dues ( payment of $550 was required per semester). But, as Mom2 mentioned there are other costs associated with parties and other events. Dues vary depending on the sorority and the university one is attending.

Google the name of the college you are going to and the word “Panhellenic”. This should get you to the specific answer about typical annual costs for sorority membership at your college. Most Panhellenic websites have estimates of first year costs, housing costs, and typical expenses associated with membership. At some colleges, the cheaper rates for sorority housing compared to dorm housing offset the dues.
You will also want to check the timing of sorority recruitment and registration deadlines.
