Can someone give me an approximation as to how much money I would have to pay to be in a sorority? Thanks!

Trying to remember from my sister from years ago so this might not be close to accurate. First year was like 500, and then 200 a year after that (they want you to pay for life, not sure if people really do).

Edit; it might be double that. I know it just wasn’t cheap for first year.

So does that cover the cost of everything? Or can you just do the things you want to do? And is it a huge time commitment?

Hi!

First off, I’m so glad you’re considering greek life! My sorority has been such an amazing experience since I joined and I have never regretted it for one moment.

For first-semester dues, they range between mid-500s to about 700. It highly depends on the sorority. Some of them include your pin (the symbol of membership you receive at initiation) while others do not. First semester dues are ALWAYS higher than regular semester dues because they include special fees paid for your initiation and some other small things that are one-time fees. However, after that they drop significantly. My dues for the upcoming semester are about half of what I had to pay for my new member semester. So know that while at first it may seem like an exorbitant amount of money, it definitely goes down.

That being said, being in a sorority is expensive. Most sororities do have payment plans and scholarships to help those who may struggle to pay dues more than others. In terms of payment plans, I think you can break it up by semester, by month, or by year. You can choose which one is easiest for you and makes the most sense for your financial situation. Every sorority will emphasize during recruitment that they will work with you to make being greek possible.

As for time commitment, it all depends on how much time you want to commit. Some people (like myself) love to be there for all the events, will volunteer to work the fundraisers, attend the formals, work on ThurtenE, etc. etc. Others will only attend the once-a-week mandatory chapter meetings. But I would highly recommend getting as involved as possible. Greek life is a wonderful experience that has definitely made me a better person in the time since I’ve joined and met some of the most amazing people on earth who I am so proud to call my sisters.
