I like how you shift the focus and make it seem like I have some problem, when you were the one who took a quote out of context in a feeble attempt to discredit my credentials. Your posts often have a patronizing undertone, so I made a comment about it, but you shouldn’t get so riled up about it.

I am willfully ignorant on a lot of topics. I had no interest in applying to AEM when I applied to Cornell, and all the people I’ve met in AEM have always specified that they are in AEM.

I am going to be patronizing again - get out more. No one is willfully ignorant. I work very long hours (check my other posts). I know a lot about Cornell, my company, my industry, my neighborhood, my country…I make a living by knowing what’s going on.

I don’t think I quoted you out of context. If you are going to take shot at someone then you need to do a better job.

I know ins and outs of Cornell sorority rush because I am always interested in what my kids are doing. I roll my eyes on a lot of things they tell me, but only when they are not looking.

I am, so that disproves your claim. Knowing that AEM is part of CALS has had zero relevance to my Cornell experience. You keep bringing up how my lack of knowledge about AEM is proof that I need to get out more, but I am not seeing the connection.

cornellgirl - There is no minimum for sorority rush. You can search on the Cornell website to see each sorority’s GPA ranking to get a sense if GPA is an important criteria. On the other hand, if a sorority’s overall GPA is high, it may just be a side effect of other factors. I think maybe you should focus more on if you have the right outfit for each day (not trying to be funny). Figure out how you are going to get from house to house dress warmly and change in and out of your boots and nice shoes. What kind of bag you are going to carry so you could fit everything in it.

This afternoon from 3-4:30 there is Webinar: Fraternity and Sorority Recruitment and Intake for parents. This is the first time Cornell is doing this. It maybe worthwhile to check it out.

johnny - through my work, I do meet a lot of students, especially students from Cornell, and I do make a point of asking them a lot of questions about their school/town just to see how involved they are with their community. It’s not hard to get 4.0 if that’s all you do, but it takes a lot more than high GPA to be successful in life. Yes, it is shocking to me that you didn’t know more about AEM.

oldfort, stop trying to lecture some random kid on a Forum and telling him how to live his college life.
So what if he spends all his weekends at college locked up in his room and being anti-social?
Does that affect you in any way? He’s not even your child.
Also, so what if johnny05 doesn’t know if AEM is part of CALS?
He could be part of a different dept and not interact with a lot of people from AEM/CALS.
People you meet often at college are usually people in the same dept or major.
So if he’s not part of AEM, I’d say he has a pretty good excuse not to know much about it.

Not knowing that AEM is part of CALS isn’t indicative of one’s social life and the fact that you’re hounding on this kid for that really makes you look immature. You claim that you are the “big man” here, and yet, you are flame-baiting as much as that kid. Sure he was being disrespectful, but it’s the Internet. People say whatever they want because of anonymity. So stop taking things so personally and stooping down to his level.

OP asked whether or not GPA would affect her Sorority Rush process.
The questions been clearly answered now, and there is absolutely no reason to continue this argument.

@Dishonored - I think I just got lectured here. Hmm…
I don’t agree with that. When I was in college, I only had one friend from my department, most of my friends were from my dorm, ECs and people I’ve met at parties. I think that’s the case for my kids and a lot of students I know.

Another mistake is to think one safely post anything he/she wants on the internet. CC is not as anonymous as one would like to think.

That’s why I said “usually”, meaning it’s not a definitive argument.

And yes, there is a false sense of security when posting on any Internet forums.
Anyone with basic computer knowledge can pretty much dox any user here.

Anyways, I’m done trying to knock some sense into a middle-aged man on the Internet. I have to thank you for the laughs though. It’s quite humorous to see a grown man become so self-conscience and defensive on a forum.

Well this isn’t true, I’m an Engineer and over 70% of my friends aren’t Engineers. The only place I really meet a swarm of Engineers is in class or Duffield lol. They are packed in there all day like zombies in a huge can.
Very true. I only know AEM is in CALs because I am interested in taking some business classes. Most of my AEM friends treat AEM like it’s its own college.
OP has a 2.67 and oldfort said his D had close to a 4.0 which has nothing to do with OP but johnny was a little rude as oldfort just uses his Ds experiences to help someone out which is the point of parents on CC in the first place. Oldfort is right to defend himself but attacking just doesn’t cut it and AEM isn’t a strong one too.
I’ve met four people on CC on campus, it really isn’t too anonymous although those people had username hints tied to their actual names. If someone was really desperate though they’d probably just search all your posts, connect it and make sense of who you are.
