My daughter is considering rushing but we have no idea what it is all about! Since we are here is there anywhere she could go to get info? Also can any of you give me an idea of what it is all about? Costs? Would she have time for a sorority if she makes the cheerleading team? Thanks!

Hi Karen, There are many threads on sororities at Alabama. Just do a search and you will probably find the answers to all your questions. My D had a pledge sister who was also a Bama Cheerleader. She de-pledged due to the time commitments of both. It’s definitely something to consider.

When my daughter was at the cheer clinic at Bama, she asked the girls if they were in sororities. The co-ed squad said that the time committment is too tough, but the all-girl squad girls all seem to rush. If she makes the all-girl team, she will be able to chat with all of her new team mates about rushing.

In the meantime, go to the Alabama Panhellinic site and there is a lot of info to get you started. Early sign up takes place until May 31, I believe, which will give your daughter plenty of time to decide.

Good luck to her this weekend for tryouts! My daughter would be there but decided that prom was more important (teenage brain syndrome)!

If your daughter decides to rush she will need recommendations (at least one for each house) and they need to be in by early July (I think… I will check and find out)

Without recs, she runs the risk of early cuts from all houses

Although an admin PITA, getting recs is a hygeine factor in having a good rush at Bama

There are numerous threads on here about recs, so do a search…

Sororities at Bama ARE expensive (they have to maintain those houses), especially first semester. If you live in the house, then it can be a good bargain, but chapter sizes are so huge that living in cannot be guarranteed for everyone.

I think on the Alabama Panhellenic link above, there should be some info on costs. If not, then I suggest you call the Greek Life office and ask them directly.
