Sorority Life?

I'll soon be applying to University of Florida, and -not trying to brag whatsoever- the odds are in my favor that I'll get accepted. I have a few questions about sorority life at UofF.

Is there any financial aid available to make it a bit easier to afford the cost of being a member of a sorority?

How hard is it to get into a sorority at UofF?

Could you give me a short description of each sorority? (involvement, values, the kind of people accepted, etc.)

Are there any sororities to avoid?

Are there any sororities to really try to get into?

Hey, my knowledge on sororities here is limited but I’ll share what I know.

First of all, be careful with your confidence in being accepted - one of my best friends was accepted to and is attending Cornell (34 ACT and 4.6 GPA) and got rejected from UF. “Wholistic admissions” are a crapshoot, no matter how good your stats are. Your best bet is to include even safer “safety” schools, and put your heart into every single application you fill out. None of us are shoe-ins ;D

I believe you’re automatically considered for merit scholarships when you apply, but they’re extremely rare. You’ll get the federal grants, work study, and loans that your FAFSA qualifies you for (if any) but that will depend on your family’s income. Most other aid will come from

Bright Futures (make sure you meet all requirements and fill out your application!)

Florida Prepaid (if your family purchased a plan)

Outside Scholarships (I can’t stress this enough - apply for as many of these as possible, you won’t regret it!)

I believe those outside scholarships might just become your best friend if you want to be sure to have extra money on hand to afford a sorority. I’ve heard of sororities having some scholarships available to members once they are initiated, but they are limited and competitive - and thus not guaranteed.

If you have good high school grades, involvement, recs, and are confident with a good personality, I’d say pretty good. However, this of course varies from year to year and from person to person. Just present yourself the best you can, clean up your social media (if necessary) and do your research.

I’m the wrong person for that, sorry. I can provide you with this link, however, that directs you to each sorority’s website (with the information you requested).

4&5: Try not to go into Rush thinking that certain sororities are “good” or “bad” because of the reputations you hear about on the internet. Do your own research, form your own opinions, and most of all, be open minded. It honestly doesn’t matter very much what Sororitygurl77 says about Delta Gamma if you go to their house and fall in love with their sisterhood, right? The worst thing you can do going into Rush is be stuck on only one sorority - oftentimes they are much different than one expects, and Rush at a school like UF is competitive and you have a much better chance of getting a bid if you go in with an open mind.

Wish you the best, good luck!
