My daughter is considering going through rush at Pitt. Neither one of us knows much about their sorority recruitment so was hoping that you might be able to help. How dominant is Greek life on campus? Is recruitment very competitive or more laid back? Are rec letters recommended/required for the different sororities? Thanks for any help!

I don’t think Greek life is predominant at Pitt by any means. You can’t rush until sophomore year.

My daughter is a freshman and rushed in September. She didn’t need recommendation letters and eventually had a couple of “bids”. So far she is enjoying the sisterhood.

I have a friend whose daughter is a sophomore and did not rush until this year. I must have misunderstood about not rushing as a freshman, but in any case, you can also wait until sophomore year.

So no letters of rec are needed prior to rush? That would be really nice. She might be interested in joining a sorority if it were a bit more low-key than some of the southern universities. Considering that she won’t know a soul in Pittsburgh when she steps on campus, I thought that it might be a nice way for her to gain a group of friends to do things with on weekends.

I believe all the sorority houses are on campus on the upper campus. PITT isn’t a Greek dominated school, not like you see down south.

My wife was in one, can’t remember what it was…something, something, something!

I remember I visited her one night during rush week and her roommate was crying because she didn’t get a bid to the sorority she wanted.

The Sororities are in Amos Hall in the Schenley Quad - Lower Campus. [Amos Hall](http://www.pc.pitt.edu/housing/halls/amos.html)

Fraternities are on Upper Campus.

The sororities are not free standing houses but each chapter has its own floor in Amos Hall

There is also now ONE floor of sororities in Brackenridge hall (I think it’s one sorority). I know because I helped a girl move in to it.

Greek Life isn’t that big at Pitt, I think it’s like 10% or so? I’m not in Greek life and neither are any of my friends and it’s not really a big deal. But the people in it are REALLY into it and seem to enjoy it a lot.
