Sorority Rush as a Black Girl

I’m a mixed girl and I have really light skin and “black girl” hair. I was wondering if the fact that I’m black and have black girl hair would make me stand out as my hair is not straight. I want to rush, but I feel like I would be looked down upon in the process because I don’t look like the girls that are in sororities at UF. Will this lower my chances of getting a bid? What about into a top tier house? Also, which houses would I fit in the most with?

Quite honestly, I think this fear itself is enough to discourage you from rushing. The sad but true fact about sororities, especially at colleges like UF, is that they’re full of fake, judgmental girls without any tolerance for diversity. I don’t know about your chances, but I do know that the “top-tier” ones are basically all white girls. I think you shouldn’t worry about this, rushing really may not be the wisest choice. It’s important to be in an environment where you’re accepted and feel comfortable

Top Tier should be classified as the sorority that looks beyond color and accepts people for what they are. If a fraternity or sorority does not accept someone due to ethnic background (race), they’re not “top tier”.

I would definitely not worry about rushing as a mixed race girl. Every sorority is different and sorority recruitment is there to help you find the perfect chapter that you will fit into. There is no perfect group of girls but that doesn’t mean that everyone is fake, judgmental and has no tolerance for diversity. Going through rush is a great experience and definitely doesn’t hurt. I think you should give it a try if you are at all interested!

Although white women are definitely the majority in Panhellenic sororities at UF, for someone to say you shouldn’t go through recruitment because you are a woman of color is absolutely ridiculous. It sounds like other people on this thread have had a bad experience with sororities at UF, but for someone to lump all Panhellenic women together as fake, judgmental and lacking tolerance seems like they’re the ones lacking tolerance. If you are at all interested in joining a sorority, I would definitely go through the recruitment process. Just because you rush doesn’t mean you actually have to join a chapter if you don’t want to, and you can drop out at any time. Don’t let other people’s backwards ideas and intolerances keep you from doing what you want.

You should not let you keep you from rushing. Fearing that you won’t get into a “good house” is completely normal, and not race specific. I was talking about this with my friends the other day in school. We are all terrified that we won’t get bids, which is ridiculously unlikely since most girls receive a bid from at least one house. I am a white, blond girl and I still worry that I won’t “fit in” with the other girls. The good thing is that there are so many houses so I’m sure I’ll - and all of my friends, and you - will find where you belong. The entire purpose behind joining a sorority, and the rushing process, is to meet new people and find a “home away from home.” As far as top tier sororities go: I wouldn’t worry about the rank of the sorority. My friend goes to FSU and she said the best advice she could give me about rushing is to go into it without knowing the stereotypes of the individual houses. It is much better to rely on the impressions you collect from the houses yourself, since you want to end up in a house with girls that you feel comfortable with. With technology and all of the forums that exist today, it is really hard not to read all of the stereotypes, I know I’m guilty of doing it. Anyways, the bottom line is that you should definitely rush. I think anyone who is even considering joining a sorority should rush since you can drop out at any time. It is much better to try it out and decide it isn’t for you than to not do it and then regret it mid-year once it’s too late. Just remember that everyone is scared of not being accepted by others since we base our self-worth so largely upon it. Everyone has their quirks and insecurities, so just be yourself and I’m sure you’re going to find the perfect house for you!
