Sorority Rush/Bid Process Question

I was looking through the newly arrived Greek Chic and noticed that “PNM Selections at the Feguson Center/Scholarship Room” is listed in the schedule after the conclusion of Open House, Philanthropy, and Skit Parties. I guess I was mistaken in how the bid process works.

I thought the sororities made their cuts and turned in their list to Panhellenic of all the PNMs they want to invite back. Once each PNM received her list, she would cut the list and decide which groups she would return to. For instance, “Jane Doe” attends Open House and is invited back to all 16. Since she can only attend 12 parties, she has to decline 4 of the invitations. She proceeds to attend the 12 parties of her choice.

“PNM Selections at the Feguson Center/Scholarship Room” leads me to believe this is a “dual cut” situation. Is this how it works…after the Open House parties conclude, Jane must make a ranked list of 12 or 16. This is then matched with the list of sororities that have invited Jane back. She can attend parties at the sororities that matched her list. Potentially, this means she could be invited back to only 6-8 parties, not all 12. Is this correct?

I want to make sure I fully understand this so my daughter enters recruitment knowing how she needs to approach this.

Thanks for any help and clarification!

[Why PNM’s don’t “cut” houses! sorority girl 101](http://sororitygirl101.com/2012/06/07/why-pnms-dont-cut-houses/)

My DD and I review every post and have learned A LOT.

Back in the dark ages the process you described in your first paragraph is how the invitation process worked. The rushees (as they were then called) received invitations from all sororities that wanted to see them back and when the rushees received the invitations they were able to accept, regret with interest or decline the invitation, subject to the rule that the rushees could not decline an invitation if it would leave her with an open spot in her party schedule.

The current process is a little bit different than anything you describe. After each party, the PNMs rank each of the houses that they attended during the round by listing her top “X” houses (where X equals either the number of parties in the next round or the number of parties the PNM attended) and then rating any remaining houses in order of her preference. So the PNM doesn’t just list the maximum number of houses that she can attend for the next round – she ranks all of the houses that she visited during the current round.

During the same time the houses are preparing their invitation lists. The PNM lists are then matched against the house lists in order of the PNM’s preference. Let’s say that the PNM has attended 16 parties during the current round and can attend parties at 12 houses during the next round. The houses that she considers her 1 - 7 have invited her back. Her 8, 9, 10, and 11 have not invited her back but numbers 12 -16 have invited her back. She will have a full party schedule even though four of the houses in her top 12 haven’t invited her back – houses 13 - 16 will fill the spaces that she would have preferred to have filled by 8, 9, 10 and 11. It isn’t possible for a PNM to actually “cut” a house – which is good – because this PNM now has a chance to see whether she can make a connection at 13, 14, 15 or 16.

Note that this doesn’t mean that a PNM will always have a full schedule. It is possible – and not all that unusual – for a PNM to have a less than full schedule. Using a slight variation of the example as above, let’s say that house 15 and 16 also decided not to invite the PNM back. At this point, the PNM has only matched to houses 1 -7, 12, 13 and 14 and will attend only ten of the possible twelve parties.

Hope that this description is clear enough to help at least a little bit.

Agreeing that any Bama Bound PNM who isn’t already reading Sorority Girl 101 should do some heavy duty reading this weekend! The author of this great blog is our very own AhPiMommy and she gives you a very thorough and straight forward look at the recruitment process.

Thank you for your responses and help! I sincerely appreciate it. My daughter and I have both been reading the blog, and we have both found the information really useful. I’m sorry I haven’t thanked you sooner…our house is completely nuts at this point!

Totally okay…am glad you have found it helpful! I am sure things area little crazy with all you have to before you leave. I KNOW that things are a little crazy at my house and I only have to get “me” to Tuscaloosa! To all the parents who are getting ready to travel to Tuscaloosa and start the recruitment process with their daughters I send y’all a big hug and good luck!
