<p>Good to see the national organizations take charge of this.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to watch the process unfold this week. I was stunned by the stories last year, and wrote my national sorority a long letter about my concerns. I did not get any response from them.</p>
<p>Given the additional cost to be part of a sorority/fraternity, and the usual bellyaching about college costs, I find it interesting that sorority rush has seen an increase in the past 5 years. </p>
<p>Alabama is the Harvard of greek life. There will never be a shortage of women who want to pledge there.</p>
<p>SVM - I too was horrified, wrote my national, and received a very thoughtful and reassuring response from them (also addressed on their website). I was proud they called the situation at Bama what it was, and reaffirmed the alums have no role in our selection process other than procedural / administrative. </p>
<p>There is a wide gap between the folks that complain about college costs and what actual consumers do. Luxury new dorms fill first. </p>

<p>Most sorority hazing is pretty mild. A little gross at times but mild.</p>
<p>Most sororities don’t haze. In fact, there can sometimes be a second semester slump. As a pledge, everyone loves you, gives you presents, encourages you to do all the activities. Once you are active, you aren’t the most special snowflake in the world and your sisters expect you to be generous, kind and attentive to the next batch of sisters. </p>
<p>I was in Alabama last week. We went over to Tuscaloosa where my niece is a member of a sorority with over 300 members. She is moving into a brand new multi million dollar sorority house that was just completed. It’s huge. They have at least one AA member. The campus as a whole is pretty impressive. </p>
<p>2300 is the number of women at my entire LAC, lol.</p>
<p>It’s nice to see how swiftly UA and the national NPC sororities reacted to this once it came to light (although one could argue that it’s been going on for decades and they didn’t react before now, I suppose).</p>
<p>Bama’s student body is now 45% out of state. I’m pretty sure that just 10 years ago that wasn’t the case. Just an interesting fact.</p>
<p>I have a niece in engineering honors at Bama. Also she’s gone greek. OOS.</p>
<p>She says it’s clear that OOS has a big impact, but that the local girls are completely on board to move into this century, as well.</p>
