Hey everyone! I'm about to attend the University of Florida in three weeks. I was thinking about going through rush because it seems like a great way to make new friends! When I started researching some of the sororities on campus, I noticed that they all seemed to be very skinny and looked almost perfect. I became concerned because I don't feel like I look this way. I am slightly overweight. Would being overweight stop me from getting a bid or severely limit the number of sororities that would consider me? Im reconsidering actually going through rush :/ thanks so much for your help!

Hey, I’ll be attending in the Fall too! If rushing and joining a sorority is something that appeals to you, don’t let anything stop you. Honestly, any group that is superficial enough to judge a person by their weight is probably not a group you want to be a part of. If you go through rush just being yourself, you’ll find a group of girls who appreciate you for who you actually are - not because you’re fulfilling a generic stereotype. Be confident and have a great time, good luck! :)

I can’t tell you which specific sororities they were from, but just from being out and about on campus and in classes, I’ve seen several not so perfect looking girls wearing letters. The purpose of rush is to get to know the sororities. Make sure you visit several of them to find the right fit for you!

I can’t comment on the weight. But I can say that if you haven’t already signed up for recruitment and have gotten all your rec letters sent in to the chapters, your appearance won’t matter.
