Sorority Rush

Hi! I will be a freshman at Vanderbilt next year and I am very interested in sorority rush.
Unfortunately, I have no legacy because my family members were not in sororities. I am from the Midwest and I am a bit worried about my lack of connections. I was wondering how important legacy and obtaining recommendations are at Vanderbilt? What is the rush process like? Is it difficult to find a sorority that suits you? Thanks for any information!

You might want to check out Greekchat.com… there should be a forum for Vandy. Good luck!

My D had no legacy and knew no one in any sorority, but she did get lots and lots of recommendations from family friends. She ended up joining one of the “top tier” sororities. If you haven’t done so already, have your mother ask her friends if they were in any sorority and get them to write letters for you. I think it helped my D get though the first few rounds. After that, it’s all about where you fit in best.

Legacy is not important anymore. It’s more helpful to know sorority girls.

Rush is just a week long and involves going to each house, talking to girls, watching performances, etc. Most girls find a sorority that suits them.

I would agree with lenny2^^ Over the summer, have your mother or aunt or female family friend ask around and identify who she knows who was in a sorority. It is not necessary that the potential recommenders know you (not like the teacher that wrote the recommendation for your college apps)–you can give the writer a “resume” to tell them about yourself and the recommender can say they “know of” you and know your family and highlight the things mentioned in your resume etc, etc.

Hi there! It’s difficult to get into a “top-tier” sorority without some combination of connections/recommendations, money, fashion sense, and beauty. But hey, if you don’t meet those standards, it’s okay – there are only two or three “top-tier” sororities out of the ten Panhellenic sororities on campus. For a really great overview of the rush process at Vandy, check out this PDF: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/greek_life/wp-content/uploads/GUIDE-to-GREEK_LIFE2012.pdf</a>

The common consensus is that rush is absolutely exhausting, but worth it. Of course, some girls are disappointed by their final bids. However, just as most well-adjusted people end up loving whatever colleges they attend, so too most girls with positive attitudes end up loving whichever sororities they pledge. G’luck!

Please make sure that you do get recommendations to all of the groups - not matter what people say, you need recommendations when going through rush at SEC schools. Just provide copies of your resume and a nice photo for everyone writing a rec (and make sure that it is just a head shot of yourself).

One thing to keep in mind is that rush in Vandy is in January - so you will need to make sure that you don’t screw up your first semester academically - which if you have made the grades to get into Vandy should not be a problem. And lastly - do not go in worrying about “top-tier” - you need to look for the house that you feel that you fit. So keep all options over and it will be just fine.

Vandy’s rush is over two weekends so you do get a little bit of a break from the parties but also can cause a little bit of stress since it is stretched out.

how can an international student get into sororities? no recommendations no relatives are the members. The only way is getting to know as much as girls in the rush?
