When do sign ups begin? Is there a meeting held prior to sign ups? When is inormation provided about the schedule/what to wear? Lastly, what date do rush activities begin in January? Any info would be appreciated!

Go to the Cornell OFSA website. And click on Info for Students Tab. Then look below the Panhellenic section for information on recruitment/schedule. Sign ups for Greek system in general should be late Oct./early Nov. Rush week is the week before school starts so about 2 days before rush starts, information meeting for both sorority and fraternity recruitment would occur then. For sorority rushing, you'll be given info on your rush group and what you have to wear each day. Hope that helps.

Here is one girl's account of what rush week is like.
oh no she didnt ? Classy and Fabulous: The Secret Life of Cornell Sororities.

I'll give you a brief overview of what its like.
Rush week for girls is NOT fun. However, pledging for two months is really fun because you guys get showered in gifts from your big sister and go to mixers and get free alcohol. Rush week runs from Tuesday-Sunday. It's from about 8AM to 8PM each day and its cold so be ready. I've talked to a lot of girls about this and my girlfriend and it goes something liek this:
Day 1 Tues- pretty casual and you go around and visit all 12 houses. wear a nice top and nice dark jeans. you will do A LOT of talking and hear A LOT of screaming when you enter the houses. you will also drink a lot of hot chocolate
Day 2 Wed- same as day 1
Day 3 Thurs- business casual; black pants and nice top. You start eliminating houses and houses start eliminating you. I think you get down to 9 houses. If you cut a house and they want you back then you have to go back or some **** like that.
Day 4 Fri- nicer and dressier. nice skirt and nice top and jewelry. you cut down to 6 houses.
Day 5 Sat- formal. wear a dress and jewelry. you cut down to 3 houses.
Day 6 Sunday- BID Night. You get and sign a bid for one sorority. They give you a t-shirt with some pun or catchy slogan or something like that.
You then go to mixers every single day (no joke) for the next two weeks. Then you have mixers like 3x a week for the next three months. Then Slope Day comes and you do a mixer with one fraternity and you get sloppy drunk. And that's your wonderful spring

Thanks for the info! I went to the Cornell greek website and was unable to find any information regarding the initial meeting or other events for January 2009 rush. I hope that they will put it up soon! That description of rush week sounds pretty crazy! Does everyone get a bid?

The initial recruitment meeting is held in January...the day before recruitment begins. They'll explain the process and the rules. You can register before then..and you should so that you get on the e-mail list (at least they did when I went through rush).

Everyone who follows the rules of rush (goes to all their scheduled houses, does proper notification in the event of absence, doesn't "suicide" a chapter) will receive a bid.

I was perusing some old Dear Uncle Ezra questions and in one of the answers he mentioned there were 11 chapters participating in spring rush...when I went through it was 12. Anyone know what's up with that...or just a typo that I'm reading into?

AoPi sisters confirmed Friday that their chapter will be closed as of the first of October, due to declining numbers within sorority rush. All current members will be moved to alumni status and allowed to live in the house until graduation. Once all current sisters have graduated, the intention is to reopen the house under a new set of women (this has been done with fraternities in the past. Pi Kappa Phi closed in 1986 and reopened in 1990, and Phi Kappa Tau closed in 1994 and reopened in 2000).

(from a blog)

Thank you for the info!

I tried to sign up for rush on the DOS Greek Life website and it says "The University you have indicated is not currently setup to accept recruits please contact your rep. Thanks!" when I click on the enrollment tab. Is something wrong with the system? I can't imagine that signups are over since they just began last Thursday night?

10 char bump

I'm having the same issues with the website. I'm going to ask a few friends and see if they are also and I'll post back.

Mine wasn't working but now it just started. I have a few questions though.
It asks for high school GPA and rank info. My school did not do GPA/rank but the space requires numbers. Should I just write 0?
Why do they care about my HS GPA/rank

Under the section that asks for college major, they ask for hours completed. does that mean the number of credit's I've already taken or am taking now? I'm a freshman so I don't have a GPA from classes I've taken as a student here, but I took credit courses at cornell as a HS student. do I include those courses as my hours completed and GPA?

thanks!

for rank you can put 0 if youre school didnt rank. as for gpa, it would probably be seen as odd that you have no way to convert whatever type of marks you received into numbers. however, if it truly is impossible, putting a 0 there also wont have an effect.

as for the number of credits youve taken, assuming youre a first semester freshman, you would put the number of credit hours you are currently enrolled in/that you will have finished by the time second semester begins.

don't put 0, some houses have a minimum GPA and will cut you automatically if you dont meet it (its usually like 2.0 or something)

As far as current GPA goes, it says on the main page to put a 0.0. I assume that also means that 0 credits completed should be indicated as well. DOS: Info For Students I don't think they are looking for credits from high school, but I could be wrong.

Some sororities are known to have girls with high GPAs. The house average GPA is published each year and they are ranked. I think number of credits is trying to figure out if you have a full time status and what year. They prefer freshman girls.

I would give an approximate rank/GPA. This is not graduate school or job application, so a good estimation should be sufficient.

why do they care about all the high school info like hs address, rank, and gpa?

I am going to say something not very PC here, now remember this is sorority rush, so by definition it is very shallow. HS information to see if you went to public vs private school? Of course, your facebook is an open book at this moment, any not so flattery pictures probably should be taken off.

or just set it to private?

I'm actually considering rush, but I'm a sophomore. Not sure...

I advised my daughter to set it open to Cornell undegrads when she was rushing.

it doesnt matter whether you went to private or public school, honestly.

and keep your fb open or not...its your discretion. just make sure you dont have anything up there that you would be embarrassed to show your mom or a future employer
