Sorority Stereotypes

Could somebody please detail to me the stereotype that goes along with each sorority? I want to rush but would like to narrow down the playing field, I just can't find anything on the stereotype of each sorority to help me do so. Thanks!

ya I’d like to know too!

That is probably the “worst” thing you could do, is go into rush without an open mind. I cannot stress that enough. Recruitment is VERY competitive at UT and unless you have MANY connections in a particular house or you are a legacy to a certain house, you will need to have an open mind. I can also tell you that there is not a bad house at UT…they are all good…they all have smart girls, they all have pretty girls, they all have girls that party alot, they all have girls that dont party at all…feel free to PM me if you have specific questions…my D went through recruitment last year and is very happy with the outcome…however, had she not had an open mind, she probably would have dropped out after day 2…

I have an open mind, believe me, but it would be nice to have some foreknowledge of sororities before rushing.

thanks swtcat, but I have an open mind too! my friends are all obsessed w/ being in a ‘top 6’ sorority, but I have no idea what they even are, nor do i care. I was just curious about whether there were stereotypes for each house (i wouldn’t take them that seriously, it would just be interesting. my dad told me when he went there each house had a different personality…just wondering what the general idea of each sorority is…)

You might find some anecdotal information on Greekchat.com. Others have posted here that this is a good site for getting information about sororities and fraternities at Texas. They have also posted that it is important to stay anonymous there. Don’t post anything that would identify you.
I think SWTCAT’s advice is the best. Keep an open mind.

Honestly girls the sterotypes of each sorority are different depending on who you talk to. You are going to hear all kinds of things from girls who really dont know what they are talking about. I stressed to my daughter the importance of not listening to the “tent talk” and to just go with her own impressions. She was surprised by how she felt about some of the houses after what she had heard about them. Most likely whatever the “sterotypes” were in the '80’s they are still the same…fair or not…

The Big 6 is very alive and well at UT…however there are MANY smart, involved, BEAUTIFUL girls that are cut from those houses very early. It is a numbers game…there are ALOT of legacies that attend UT as well as girls that have connections from thier high school or they are “camp girls”. This is where many girls are disappointed because they cannot see past the Big 6 and once they are cut, they drop out…This is very unfortunate because ALL of the houses offer exactly what the Big 6 offer…a full social calendar, sisterhood, philanthropy opportunities…lifelong friendships…leadership opportunities…this is why I stress to keep an open mind…in short…it really shouldnt matter what the sterotypes are…what should matter is where you feel the most comfortable…where can you feel comfortable sitting around in your PJ’s with no makeup on and know that no one is judging you??

It’s a vicious world out there and even more when it comes to the rushing process.
Beware.

Just get rid of everything in your wardrobe besides XXL neon shirts and black leggings, and you’ll be set.

ahhh sasha I know I’m scared!! any advice (besides the warning??)

classywire: i have no neon shirts or black leggings…

Just be confident of yourself and be genuine. Be careful who you trust at first, because until bids go out and everything, it’s every girl for herself. Vicious, like I said!

Not everyone in a sorority is a fake and a frigid b’, but the ones that are like that are the ones that hold up the rep. It’s like making friends with any girl, except there’s a buttload of them and your time is really really really pressed so you do have to go off first impressions.

Ooooh and when and if they do make you walk around campus/west campus and if heels are part of the ‘‘recommended dress code,’’ well I heard about some girls putting on flats in between the walks so that you know, your feet don’t die. lol

Don’t invest yourself too much in a specific one if and end up disappointed if you don’t get it! Just keep an open-mind. They’re all sort of the same, just different greek names and traditions/secrets/whathaveyou. It’ll be fun though, go for it.

Yeah!! What’s the deal with the black leggings and GIANT neon tank tops?! I spent the weekend in Austin, and I swear, 85% of the people at the drag were dressed like that!! Seriously, do they think they’re living back in the 80’s or something??

:p Roundup Weekend.
Hope you’re not ■■■■■■■■.
It’s a big tradition.
Well, not the neon, but the event itself.

And/Or 80s themed parties are really popular.

hahah, not ■■■■■■■■. I was just curious. So, what’s roundup weekend??
Ohh 80’s party’s sound fun!! :)
