Sorry, another chances thread :-)

Hello,

I’m thinking of applying ED I next year and was wondering what my chances are…(I don’t expect you to read all this, lol)

GPA: about 3.2-3.3 UW, all honors/AP’s (AP Bio/Chem/Physics B) (my junior grades have been a little lower because of extenuating circumstances, but my GC is going to talk about that in the rec.)

Courses: (9) English 1 honors, Geometry hon., Civilization hon., Physics, Spanish II hon., Art, Programming in C
(10) English 2 hon., Algebra II hon., Chem hon., Civics II hon., Spanish III hon., Foods, Assembly Language Programming hon.
(11) English 3 hon., Pre-calc, Spanish IV hon., AP Phys. B, AP Bio, US History hon., UNIX Shell Programming hon.
Next yr (12) English IV hon., Spanish V hon., Calculus, Economics hon., AP Chem, (either AP Physics C or Forensic Science), Programming in C++

SAT: haven’t taken the new ones yet, I got 1410 on the old ones and 213 on PSATs
SAT II: Math IIC: 710, probably gonna take either Spanish w/ listening, Physics, or Japanese w/ listening
ECs:
-Boy Scouts: Life Scout, around 70 volunteer hrs for this
-Museum of Science (Boston) volunteer (900 hrs, going to be over 1000 by application time)
-MOS Exhibit Hall Interpretation intern (paid)
-Math League (top freshman/sophomore scorer)
-Junior Mentoring (basically talk to freshmen)
-Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Attendee
-National History Day competitor
-I currently hold a job at TJMaxx (frontline supervisor/customer serv. coord.) and work around 30 hrs/week (employee of the quarter too, wahoo)
-Spanish Club/Chess Club/Anime Club/DDR Club (yeah I’m a dork)

Also both of my parents went there, my dad CGS and mom CAS, and I’m hoping to either enter CAS for natural sciences or the 7 yr med program.

Thanks in advance :-)

you should be fine especially with ED

You'll definatly get into CAS, but I'm not sure on the 7-year med program. I'm sure someone else knows more about this than I do, but a friend of mine has a gpa over 4 unweighted, and he's in the top five students in the class, and he was worried about the 7-year med program so he just went into CAS. His father works and BU and his sister also goes there, so he has a pretty good idea about the standards I'd assume. However, his extra curriculars and sports are almost non-existant so those could help you out a lot.

If you are planning on going for an MD, as my friend is, if you major in Bio for 2 years in CAS you can apply to the med school after your sophmore year. If they accept you into the med school then you switch over there immediatly and graduate in a total of 8 years. It's also possible to do the same if you start of in BioMed Engineering, but in that case you'd switch over after you complete your 4 undergrad years. You'd still get an MD in 8 years.

Edit: Ok, I take it back, upon reading your details more closely I would be REALLY supprised if you didn't get into the 7-year med program.

i'll be shock if you didn't get in to bu.

you'll be fine. don't worry :)

thanks :-)

"In the 2002-2003 entering class, the average high school GPA was an unweighted 3.97 on a 4.0 scale, and rank in class was in the top two percent. The average combined SAT score was 1500. SAT II Subject Exam scores in chemistry averaged 747. The scores on the SAT II Subject Exams in Match IIC and Writing averaged 756."

This is from the Medical School Admission Requirements book from the Association of American Medical Colleges for BU's 7-year program.

However, "Personal characteristics sought in applicants are motivation, maturity, and an understanding of a career in medicine," so if you can write some really good essays that convey this, you might have a chance. But your ECs don't really show any outside interest in medicine.

The difference in selectivity between CAS and 7-year Medical is tremendous. This isn't to discourage you, but just to clarify things regarding the program. Scores aren't everything, though. All of my SAT II scores were below average, and I am a finalist in the program (made interview cuts). So just apply, but don't get your hopes up. Even if you're rejected from the program, you're considered for BU regular undergrad. Hope that helped! Good luck!
