Sorry just have to blurt it out somewhere

I got in to OSU, they are flying me out in March to do a campus tour- all expenses paid and I just got a letter in the mail today saying I’m getting $7,500 in scholarships!! Woo hoo!!

If anyone else has any cool extra info to blurt or brag about their OSU acceptance please share!!

How did that happen. How long after decescion did you get your lettter

Congrats! Are you OOS? What do you want to major in and were you an auto-admit to the Honors college?

I got my letter about 2 and a half weeks after I was accepted. I have no idea how i got it, I barely made the cutoff for the Buckeye National Plus Scholarship, (needed an 1180 SAT M+V, I had a 1200)
Ya I'm an out of stater, I live in california, and my major I'm pursuing is business. Unfortunately I was not an auto-admit to the Honors, I have to fill out the app.
I also applied for the Morrill Scholars Program scholarship, have not heard from them yet.

That is great, I think that OSU would really like to have more OOS students.

My S and I went to Scholars Day last Friday. I have to say, I am so impressed with the job that the admissions staff does. Everything that we have attended at OSU is first rate.

We were really impressed with the Scholars program at OSU. It's a great program and really makes a big U smaller.

My S was not an auto admit to the Honors program either. Although the Honors program has it's benefits, after Scholars Day he is more interested in a specific Scholar's House.

If you have any other questions or want any info (limited as it might be!) on the Honors or Scholars programs, I'll be glad to try and answer.

I think that OSU has a bad rep and the University is doing a lot to try to change it. I do want to say that I am the last person who thought that my S (and the whole family) would like Ohio State.

Deb922-
I definitely agree with you! If you read the academic plan on the schools website they are definitely trying to improve the school's academic stature. My S was an OOS auto-admit into the honors program and received a substantial scholarship and an invite to the Maximus competition. He is definitely considerning Ohio State.

Is OSU really diverese. I hope so I don't want to be the only OOS black person living on campus. Hopefully their more. I really like this school from what i've read and seen. HOpefully I can make a visit sooner or later

wow thanks deb, that was helpful. So, although I know the scholars program is different from honors because it is split into different groups, are there any other differences? Is scholars looked down upon by honors because it is not right up there with it? Also, what program did your S decide to do? What kinds of activities has she been able to do? Thanks.
I also agree that OSU does get a bad rep, but its really neat to see that they are really trying to turn that around, and so far I think they've done well ith that, especially their business program.

You sound just like me....1200 SAT, OOS from Cal, and Im gonna be majoring in finance. I want to get into the scholars program, but their departments dont match the things Im into, should I still try to get into the prgram? Im pretty sure Im gonna get accepted into the school because of my gpa and ACT scores, so when do u think I should get my acceptance letter if I just sent my app online 2 days ago?

My application status page showed a decision after only six days. A couple days later in the mail, I got my acceptance.

As for your scholars question, you know the honors program is not out of the question, if you had a 1300, that is not the cutoff, that only means you will get into the Honors automatically when you apply. Mark down the Honors program as your number one choice when they ask for it. Write a well-written essay and hope for the best. Why not try, it wouldn't hurt, it can only help.

I'll try to answer your questions. Rayp66 congrats on your S's acceptance. If you haven't visited OSU yet, I think that you will be impressed when your S goes to the Maximus competition. I know that they will pull out all the stops for these kids. They really want to recruit high stat kids.

My S has the scores for the Honors program but not the rank for the auto admit. We went to the Scholars Day thinking that none of the Scholars programs fit him and that he would put the Honors program as his first choice. He completely changed his mind and decided to apply to a Scholars program as his first choice and Honors second.

The big perk for Honors is the priority scheduling. You get to schedule before everyone but the athletes. This is the best, esp. in a school like OSU. Honors also has special classes for certain majors and Honors housing. I think that you also have priority for research and this is very important is that is something that you want to do.

Scholars is more social. It is a program and a dorm which people of like interests live. Some Scholar houses have certain classes that people in that major can take but that it not true of all Scholar houses. The dorm that we saw was very nice, it had a big lobby and for Mom, I loved the fact that they have tutors come to the dorm 3 nights a week. The kids that we met were so nice and friendly and they all seemed to like the Scholar houses.

I can't imagine that the Honors kids would look down on the Scholars kids. First of all, Ohio State is so big that your contact with Honors kids would not be great. Secondly we met kids that were auto-admits that wanted to switch from Honors to Scholars because Scholars is more of a social community and Honors is more independent.

I do want to impart this info as I thought that it was the single most important piece of info that we got. We asked the director of the Scholars program how to list the order of the programs that my S wanted. She said that my S was able to apply to Honors or Scholars because of his scores. But she indicated that 80-90% of the admits to Honors are through the auto admit program. And to be admitted to Honors, you have to have a great essay. My S is going to be an engineer, writing is not his forte. But she said that if you had the stats to go into Honors and got the invite for Scholars Day that you should be almost an auto-admit to the Scholars program of your choice.

I think that as a business major, the Communication Technology program would be a good fit, as would be International Affairs, Mount Leadership or Enviroment and National Resources.

For the person who wanted to know if he would be the only black guy at OSU, I can't imagine that you would feel that way. I looked up the stats and 8% of OSU is AA. That's is almost 2700 students. Ohio is a diverse state and the Ohioans that I have met are open to all of those of different races.
I am pretty sure that OSU has AA frats and a good AA community.

I hope that I answered the questions that people asked.

deb922
Thank you and congrats to you and your S! My S is also in the engineering program and writing isn't his strong point either, but I gues that's why they're future engineers. He is trying to decide between ME or Eng Physics.

He did make a trip in late October after applying and definitely liked the school, but was also accepted at UMich. I will be making the trip to Columbus with him in a few weeks and then the following week to Ann Arbor.

The honors program (priority scheduling and housing) has been my big selling point to him. I think that he would do fine at both schools, but I think that OUS is a better fit and the fact that Michigan costs an additional $10k/yr more than OSU. I also think that the school has done an outstanding of promoting themselves to him also.

I haven't heard him listening to "The Victors" but I have heard " Across the Field " and "Hang on Sloopy"

Since I applied too late to be auto-admitted into either the honors or scholars program, is there a deadline for applying to these programs?

The deadline for applying is Feb. 1

rayp66, maybe if you mention that your S wants to attend OSU over UMICH, they'll kick in a extra thousand or two!

The difference that my S felt with Ohio State over Michigan was that he felt that OSU was more nuturing. The line was if you get into Ohio State, we'll do everything we can to keep you here. If fact I think that there Freshman retention rate is 94% in engineering. Michigan seems to give off the vibe that it is more competitive, a survival of the fittest so to speak. That is not a bad thing, it's just not the atmosphere that he wanted. He got the same vibe from Purdue and he declined to apply there. We know kids at Michigan and Purdue who love it, it just wasn't for my S. rayp66, the $10k difference isn't too shabby either.

Another Mom thing that I loved were the food options at OSU. I thought that they had the most and best options for food service of any school that we toured, hands down. I love a place that you can get smoothies, lattes and pizza delivered to your room all within your board options.

Thats cool about the food thing. But are any of ur guys' kids going to a local JC to get their gen. ed. out of the way? A lot cheaper, and more interaction with the profs. I thinks thats what Im gonna do, especially since Im an OOS.

tripperian35-
S has discussed possibly taking a few classes at IUPUI during the next few summers. I think that he is wanting to ensure that he finishes his BS in 4 yrs
and possibly pursue the combined BS/MS .

deb922-
I would have to agree with you in regards to the difference in "vibe".
I do not think that more $ from Michigan could offset the advantages that my ds would gain by being in the honors program. Michigan does have a few programs, but nothing of this magnitude.

And then you have Purdue. We are from Indiana and he did apply grudgingly. I still haven't figured out why I made him do it because I knew the answer all along- No! He does not want to be like the majority of the kids in the state who end up at IU or PU and has felt that the Purdue takes it for granted that all kids from Indiana want to attend. This was obvious from the less than generous merit aid that came with the acceptance letter. Then they wonder why they are losing kids to out-of-state schools.

Let me weigh in here on OSU's College of Engineering. I was a graduate of OSU's Cof E many years ago so I do not guarantee if my thoughts are still valid but here goes.

My years in Columbus were the happiest of my life and I received a top notch education too. Frosh year was brutally hard academically but I survived and went on to get a PhD at Cornell. I can honestly say that that first year at "The Big Farm" was the most challenging of my academic career.

While OSU is a huge university, the CofE is rather small by comparison. I did find it to be a very nurturing atmosphere and my CE graduating class numbered 43 students. I knew most of the CE faculty and they knew me. In fact we played a few faculty vs student basket ball games each winter quarter. Some of the other departments(ME, EE) are significantly larger so the experience may be somewhat different from mine.
