Sorry to repeat topic, but chances for OOS?

Hey everybody, sorry if my question is entirely redundant, but what do you guys think?

I go to a Catholic college prep school in Columbus Ohio, ranked among the top 5% in the US. OOS, obviously

I have a 3.6 Accum weighted (Don't know what it is unweighted)
My classes are -

English - AP English Lit./Comp., AP English Lang., Fr and So. English
Math - Algebra I/II, Hs. Geom., PreCalc AB
Hist. - American Hist, Economics, Government, World Hist.
Science - Intro. to phys./chem., Biology, HS Chem., HS Physics, AP Bio
Lang. - Latin I/II, Spanish I/II, French I/II
Religion - Fr., So., Jr (Morality), Sr. (Comparative Religion)

I consistently get B/B+ grades, but my grades are significantly deflated because of my curriculum. We lose roughly 50% of our class after Fr. yr., most of whom earn 4.0+ at other parochial/public schools. Our Regular level classes are similar to HS classes elsewhere, our HS classes AP, and our AP college courses. My English Lit. is the same Soph. class they teach at kenyon, and my Bio the same So. class at Miami of Ohio. We send at least half of our class to OSU, (which is pretty good, I think)

Acivities -
Tennis - 2nd singles, MVP, Captain, 1st team all league
St. Vincent de Paul volunteer this summer
Appalachia service trip (Environmental camp)
Altar Serving
National Honor Society
School language tutor
I teach myself foreign languages - I speak Spanish, English, Japanese, Italian, and French fluently
Etc.

Scores -
AP English Lang. - 5
SATI - - - - 680 650 740 = 2070 superscore; 2050 w/o superscore
No ACT

ETC -
I am 1/4 Japanese (Does that qualify as a minority?)

I really hope things pan out; No alumni, etc connection with the school, or state residency, but I like UT a lot. Does anyone have tips for applying, etc? How's the campus/student life?

Thank you all for your patience and help, I really really appreciate it

TJM

Asians/Indians are a majority minority here, so it probably doesn't help at all that your asian. Scores are decent, which are the Math and Reading scores, since you didn't label them.

The other 3/4 wouldn't happen to be native american, now that's a minority that will work for you.

I think maybe slight reach.

if you were in-state you'd be in, oos can't tell

You might want to take a look at this post:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/405621-profile-oos-students.html

... i have no idea what your chances are, (and this is of course a few days later than this message) but if we both get in to UT and go there, then we'll be the super cool ohio kids. fun.

UT doesn't care what your GPA is. They care what your class rank is. There is no way to give you a chance without a class rank or a school profile to use for your GPA. If the best and brightest at your school have lower grades, it won't affect you as much. Where do you rank?

UT does not superscore, and they don't use the writing score at all. Being a minority can help, but Asians are overrepresented at UT compared to the Texas population so it could hurt you. I actually think that you need to be 1/2 to be considered a minority, but it can't hurt to put that you're biracial.

Based on your SAT writing score you are probably a good writer, which will help you in the personal achievement index (the essays are 3/7 of this total). Your ECs are pretty good too, probably a 5 or 6 out of 6. Too bad there's really no way to write about learning the languages on your own--if it's a significant time commitment you should put it into the app on applytexas as an extracurricular or hobby.

Going to a Catholic prep school actually will probably hurt you. UT uses its "Personal Achievement" points to add points for people who attend high schools of low socioeconomic background.

By the way, do you go to St Charles? If so, I've heard it's a really good school and you'd be really well prepared for UT.

You are definitely a reach applicant for UT. Your scores need to be a bit higher, but write really good essays and you might get in.

Rank is NOT a factor for OOS students. They only care about rank for in state students. If you are an OOS applicant, they pretty much look at everything holistically. Make yourself look good in your essays, show interest, and you just might get in. Good luck!

That is completely untrue bballa4life. You don't know what you are talking about.

UT uses a formula to compute a "projected freshman GPA" which includes only SAT Math and CR scores and Class Rank. That's it. Nothing else. The "holistic" part is when they read your essays and rank them out of six, then rate your ECs and leadership on a 1-6 scale as well. They then combine this info graphically and take those on the best positions of the graph.

RANK is the single most important aspect of admission for ALL applicants. It's the most important aspect of the projected GPA for those not in the top ten percent or out of state applicants, and is the way to get in for top ten percent Texas applicants.

Read the top ten percent report to see exactly what are the admissions criteria for non-top ten percent applicants:
