First off, I'm located in Illinois and will be applying to UNC oos this fall. Now, I believe that I have good ec's and leadership, can write an essay, and have a 3.86 GPA. My only problem is sigh my test scores... I received a 27 on my ACT and C:590, M:570, W:680 E:12. Unfortunately, the only excellent score is my essay score.

Now, here appears my dilemma, should I apply early in mid-september and take the roll of the dice in getting in, or should I retake the ACT and SAT (october 14th?) and thennn apply?

I'm definitely retaking the ACT, but the only school that I'm applying to that wants SATs is UNC.

I've just heard that I might have a chance if I apply early, and I'm not sure if retaking the SAT for maybe C:600 W:700 M:590 is worth it for oos.

Please, any suggestions are welcome and well-needed!

I think you should retake the SATs. Right now I think your looking at a rejection, just because it's real hard for out-of-state students to get in, or the possibility of being deferred. Don't take that chance, just retake the SAT's and see what happens (try to aim for a 1400 or better in Math and Reading).

Thanks, anyone else?

I'd recommend retaking the SAT. You definitely have a chance, but taking the test again can only improve your chances. Do everything you can to make yourself more competitive.

UNC accepts the ACT...

I got in and only submitted my ACT scores.

Yes UNC does accept the ACT but retake everything if you want to try for oos. Only 18% of students are from oos at UNC. PS don't forget to have fun and don't tie your hopes to any one school.

I kinda feel bad for out of state students because it is so hard for them to get in!!! I know there was no way I would have been accepted out of state!!!!

Hey lisa!
I'm out of state, too (VA.)
I'm gonna be a freshman at UNC this year--- go heels!
I heard from a lot of kids last year who had lower test scores OOS and still got in, but it hurts your chances (to be blunt.)
With so many applications, I'd imagine that some of the applications from OOS get tossed aside based on test scores.
BUT BUT BUT--- A) that's not always the case.
B) you can retake them.
C) write kick-butt essays.
D) this one's important. write to UNC. Type a letter, explain your situation. Tell them what you plan on retaking. Sell yourself! It shows your interest, your concern, etc. Seeing as you recieved a 12 on the essay, I trust you can send off a fairly well-written explanation. Guaranteed, that's what will be sitting at the top of your application file.

and relax. I know that's impossible to do right now, but it all works out in the end.
best of luck, study study study, and be proactive!
((I'd be happy to edit the letter for you, too. let me know, i'll message you my email address.))

Right now with those scores, I'd say you have almost no chance of getting in. Definitely retake and wait to apply regular.

My S (who was accepted OOS) had many friends with better stats than yours get rejected. It's very hard to get accepted OOS. You need to aim for 1350 (or ACT equivalent) to feel good about your chances.
