I just got my scores back from my last SAT, and while I didn't do terribly I didn't do very well either. I got an 1880 with a 690 reading 520 math and 690 writing. I got a perfect 12 on my essay which I'm really happy about, but my math skills are not very good (obviously) and I usually just freak out when I do standardized tests. My question is, is this SAT score a big red flag to Princeton adcoms even if I explain that my strengths are definitely not in math but in writing? Hmm I'm worried.

buddy, unless your a recruited athlete, play for the New York Philamonic, have a parent of influence or who donates mad dinero, your not gonna make it unfortunately.

raise your verbal and writing above 700 if you really think those are you strengths

Retake is a must

re-study and then retake. Math is one of my weaker subjects as well, so I can empathize, but for all three of those scores could use a boost; if you're going to promote your strengths in reading and writing they've got to be exceptional to overcome your math score. Secondly, the level being tested in the SAT is not difficult and you need to be performing well on all the sections to set a good foundation of a competitive application.

A quick caveat, however. These are solid scores; posters here are speaking harshly because they are considering the scores in the context of applying to one of the world's most selective universities. Unfortunately, your competition is an uncomfortably significant number of people who will have scored 750+ on all sections and also have some crazily unique and valued extracurricular activities/personal characteristics. Give it your best shot on your retake, and whatever happens, remember to apply to a good range of schools and you'll be perfectly fine.

Thanks for your help guys, and I appreciate what you're saying Mea... thanks for the not harsh info lol.

i started with a writing 550, verbal 580, and math 660.

i took the old sat twice and the new sat once. im done taking the sat.

i improved over the course of 6 months with the following (and I didn't prep... don't got the money unfortunately)
