Hey all, I know this is pathetic but I live in NYC and have never worked before. I want to work this summer with some friends who have also never held jobs before. We want to make some money between HS and College. Our parents refuse to help us find ones, and we have no idea how to find one.

We figure we can look at the job section of the NYTimes... but we want more than minimum wage (we don't mind how hard or boring the work is, if we can do it together) so we have no idea what to do... are there websites to go to... should we walk around Manhattan going into stores asking if they are hiring... I know this is pathetic, but we have never done anything like this before, so maybe people on CC who have held summer jobs and throw in suggestions, esp. new yorkers can throw in some ideas/some basic job finding advice...

Go get a list of big multinational corporations with offices in NYC, send resumes. Maybe they're looking for someone to do mailroom duty.

Anyway um you could always go with a job waiting tables....imagine if you worked at a luxury restaurant where the average check per party is about $400.....imagine the tips...$60 or more. Your base salary doesn't really matter....gee you might make more waiting tables at these expensive places than you would working for Goldman Sachs.

get paid more than minimum wage without any work experience....? like sphere718 said, go find a mcdonalds and work. once you have some experience, then you can negotiate for a higher hourly rate.

I don't know whether you're into consultancy, but you can try some boutique firms. They say that they only take college juniors, but sometimes boutiques make exceptions for very talented ppl. It's worth a try if you want to make more than min. wage.

Don't work at McDonalds. It is not seen as paying your dues. Try working at summer programs affailiated with universities. I worked at a CMU workshop and lifeguarded last summer. This year based on only one year of experience I am the Head Lifeguard of a major pool, earning 11.00 per hour, and I will be a HS junior. Find a position that pays well and you like. Also, it is better to find a job that you like than a job that pays the most.

That's not true. If you don't try it'll be a fantasy, but just give it a shot. I did and I got one now without any contacts. It's not as hard as ppl say it is.

A paid internship is hard to come across as a grad student, let alone an undergrad. I'd imagine that it would be nothing short of a miracle to get one as a HS student.

No, people don't get them because employers have no motivation to waste that much money. If they can get a motivated HS student, they can get a motivated college student for the same cost, and he will be much more responsible and knowledgeable and have a much higher chance of working at the firm upon graduation of college

My dad is an attorney at a large law firm. He offers paid internships to hs and pre-college. However, I am not interested in law or I would jump at this.

This is probably why ppl believe that HS students can't get paid internships. If nobody tries, nobody will get one and the legend continues.

legend? what the hell are you talking about. HS students get paid internships all the time. Just not at the companies/divisions/jobs we're all pathetically obsessed with.
