sorting things out.....

Hey guys wanted ur help regarding US undergraduation. I am giving my SAT1 in october and SAT2 in november. I wanted to know if it would be good if i did my undergrad from INDIA(IIT , D.C.E) and then went to US for my masters or would it be right to do my to do undergrad from USA(supposing I get into top 10). I plan to take up civil engineering so ur advice should consider as to where it is taught better. Also it would be great if u could enumerate about things such as exposure , quality of study and anything u feel is important.

Please take the financial thing in consideration too.

I am in class 12 in delhi.

Ah I cover this in my FAQs. A few days.

It all depends upon personal preference, in my opinion.

guys i need you to chalk out the things in detail.
@blue_box ?

Wait for BlueBox’s FAQ :)

Yea, I’m trying to cover all Frequently Asked Questions. A day or two.

it’s good that you are coming up with those FAQs but i urge other members to spill their share of beans regarding my question as fast and as thorough as possible.

common guys give ur answers too. I am tired of waiting of waiting for blue box’s faq’s.

Haha. Don’t wait for my FAQ then. I’m lazy.

The answer to your question depends on a lot of things. Will you do your post grad right after undergrad? Are you willing to spend the near 1 cr cost of going to the US for undergrad, if you don’t get aid? Are you looking for a more theoretical or practically oriented education? Does a liberal arts curriculum matter to you? Also, what class are you in right now?

I can’t plan your life for you.

“I can’t plan your life for you”

What he said.

Like we said before, weigh the pros and cons on what matters to YOU.

We’re HS seniors/freshman students too.

If you get into a top 10 university in the US with financial aid, you’d be a fool not to go IMO. But yes it’s entirely up to you…if you find the rigor and the non-engineers-aren’t worth a fart-attitude in IIT more appealing, go by all means, it’s a very good university too.

I’d say the exposure at US unversities is more. Academic rigor, ehh i can’t really comment. I’ve grown up listening to IIT-this IIT-that…so I guess the rigor of engineering courses in IIT would be more than in its US counterparts…but you don’t have the option of taking all the amazing courses that univeristies in the US offer.

@bluebox well I didn’t ask the members to plan my life its just that some advice is always handy. AS for the questions you raised the thing goes like this ,

Probably go for post grad after some work experience. And it will be USA.
2.Money is a concern since i come from a midde class family. But i may think against taking financial aid if it means decrease in chances . Do you think its worth coming out of under graduation in debt?

I am surely looking for a nice mix of both( practical and theoretical) perhaps more of practical education.

i am in class 12th.

well minoring in some liberal class won’t shriek me out.

If you’re going to the US for grad school, then you’ll have to keep that expense in mind too. So it might be a good idea to do your undergrad in India. Especially if money is an issue.
Coming out of graduation in significant debt is not worth it. Also, I get the feeling that you haven’t really prepared for US admission applications over the past few years. Getting into a top 10 school, consequently, will be difficult. Getting into one that gives you aid will be even more difficult.
