Sould I.....?

Should I appy ED if i can’t pay? But I’m planning on doing a major sholarship eassy writting summer thing.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! If your parents won't agree to pay no matter how little aid you get, then absolutely not under any circumstances

but what if i end up getting enough aid in the aid (grants/scholarships)?

but what if you don't? This is the main question. If you don't get enough money, you'll basically be screwed.

but i REALLY want to go to this college

Call the college and ask about it, also look into applying EA if possible.

but dosen't ED carry more weight?

Is the college unusually difficult to get admitted to or are your stats below their 75% admit?

I think you need to look at the college's website, call the college, find out how likely it is that you are going to get your $$$, ask them what will happen if you don't get your $$$...

I think you can get out of ED because of lack of funds if they don't meet your demonstrated need, but demonstrated need is often defined differently by colleges and families.

I would say, though, no. It's too risky--way too risky--and surely there are other, cheaper colleges that you would be happy at, yes? So apply to all those + the college you really want to go RD and then find out how much money they give you.

ED's admit stats are generally higher, but EA is safer, especially in these circumstances.

BE CAUTIOUS!

Perhaps we would be better able to help if you tell us what college it is. You don't have to, of course, but it's hard to tell whether or not it's worth it if we don't know its financial aid history or its admission standards, etc....

www.hsc.edu

I looked at the website and here is what I found.

1) Their admission rate is ~70%.
2) Their middle 50% stats are (this means 25% of accepted applicants scored over, 25% scored under):
SAT: 1040-1230
ACT: 21-28
GPA: 2.9-3.6
3) They have merit and need based scholarships.

Look at this page on their site http://www.hsc.edu/finaid/ and calculate your EFC; this will give you a rough estimate of what they anticipate your EFC to be, which may help you and your family decide if they will give you enough aid.

I don't know what your stats are, but even if they are below the middle 50%, I would really recommend Early Action. NOTE: Their Early Action notification is AFTER the normal deadlines for other schools, so if you do Early Action make sure you apply to other schools, just in case.

I hope this helped--I realize you could find all the info on that site, sorry if this was useless :)

what college?

He posted a link...

Hampden-Sydney in VA.

It's all male for those who don't know.

And if you can get out for financial reasons you aren't allowed to accept another good school, it usually has to be a state school. It's not a risk I would run

but i can apply RD to state schools.

PLEASE make sure you apply to other schools. I know a person who got into stern at NYU ED but couldnt afford to pay and he got his financial package in December and he couldnt contact anyone at the office b/c of christmas break and he was stuck with no other colleges applied to and Stern which he could not afford

Find out if there is any significant statistical advantage to applying early. Sometimes there is almost none. That said, I would not let my son apply early decision to a college we could not easily afford. And you know what? We got a minimal financial aid package from them, so I'm glad he is not locked into attending that school.
