South Lawn?

The website for the south lawn isn't very helpful.

What exactly is it, and when will it be completed?

It’s a project that is adding a large amount of square feet of classrooms/meeting space/offices/lounges to the grounds. It’s basically a massive project to extend Grounds because we’re out of room. It’s going to be amazingly beautiful and very well used. Should be done by June 2010, but they’ve been really cranking along, I wouldn’t be surprised if they move that forward. I just doubt they’ll hold classes in it until Fall '10 (sad for me :()

It is pretty funky, because they use a viaduct(bridge) to extend the lawn, so there is literally grass growing on a raised surface. There are new buildings along the side of the extended lawn. Someday, perhaps UVa will have the money and the guts to tear down Old Cabell Hall. Doing so is controversial, but the fact is that it closed off the lawn against Jefferson’s express design, and now it is stuck in the middle as an obstacle. In any other setting, it would be a treasure in and of itself, as it is quite beautiful. But it just does not fit and needs to go. Then the South Lawn will just be part of The Lawn.

Also, be sure you watch this video, which I think lays it out pretty well.
