South Quad at UMich

I was accepted into the LSA honors college at UMich, and I have a couple of questions about the honors housing.

  1. I emailed the LSA honors coordinator asking if I was guaranteed a spot in south quad if I've been accepted into honors. she replied saying that spots for south quad are given out based on availability, so it's not guaranteed that all honors kids get to live there. is this true? are there actually a lot of honors kids who don't get to live there because spots run out?
  2. what exactly is south quad like? I've heard pretty mixed reviews about it, even though it seems pretty nice. can someone describe to me the living environment, people, cleanliness, and convenience, etc?

thanks!!

  1. I might be wrong on this (apologies if so), but I mean the fact that they still house non-Honors kids at SQ makes me think that that is quite rare. The only times I've met someone in the Honors program who didn't live in SQ was cause they wanted to room with someone who wasn't in the Honors program.
  2. Honestly, probably one of the most convenient dorms on campus. The rooms are okay, but I mean everything else about the dorm is quite nice (study rooms, dining hall, the 9th floor (study area), etc.). In regards to the people, considering a lot of people live in SQ, it's almost impossible to try and classify them.

It certainly is a relatively nice dorm. It’s not known to be super crazy social like Markley though. No Air conditioning in rooms. Convenient to the Union and Diag. Also packages come to West Quad which my kid has found to be a bit of a hassle.

Agree with Hailbate that it makes no sense that there’s not room for all honors kids given how many non honors kids are housed there.

  1. I was also accepted into the LSA Honors Program. At the Campus Day Honors meeting I attended they said that it’s rare that an honors student can’t get honors housing and that everyone who has requested it has gotten it over the last few years. Hopefully we will have no problems.

thanks everyone!! your answers really helped.
i have another question, though. @hailbate and @maya54 said that south quad houses a lot of non-honors kids. i have a friend who’s not in honors but is someone i’d like to room with. how possible is it for her to live with me in south quad next year?

@willowhearted Slim. If you choose to room with someone not in Honors you will be thrown into the general housing pool. So I mean its technically possible, but not very likely
