Can anyone tell me what south quad doubles are like? How is the location, bathrooms, people, etc? Thanks!:)

Also in south quad honors housing. I hear the rooms are big.

I just spent like 10-15 minutes writing a really good response to this and then it said I hadn’t logged in. ■■■ for real. Anyways, I haven’t been on CC in forever hahahahaha but I did live in SQ last year for the Honors Program! I’m living there again this year but not in Honors Housing (though I am still in honors).

Okayyy. So the rooms are really big. I think they’re the biggest on campus. Nearly all doubles are 12x19. My friends from Markley used to be amazed because their rooms are literally 2/3 of the size. So space is not an issue. If you’re in Honors then you’ll most likely be on the 3rd or 4th floors. 1st/2nd if you’re in substance-free, and there’s a chance you could get 5th/6th but that’s usually for Honors sophomores and above. Athletes live in the 1st/2nd/6th/7th/8th floors. There’s 2 elevators per side (east and west) so four total obviously. The 9th floor is entirely devoted to studying/computing. There’s lots of tables, chairs, Macs, PCs, and a few printers. There’s a rescomp site where you can ask the people who work there computer questions. The cafeteria is decent, but I personally think WQ’s is better. The good thing about squad is that it has continuous dining. On the main floor, there is Cafe Conxion which is like a little food/drink/toiletries place, and they also make smoothies/coffee/other stuff. It’s small but Ugo’s in the Union is only across the street. In the basement, there’s a pizza place (Ciao Down) and also a tv, sitting spaces, a ping pong table, and you can study too. The bathrooms are just normal community-style bathrooms. Nothing really out of the ordinary. Squad is coed and single sex, it depends on your hallway. It doesn’t matter though, because the opposite sex is not far away at all.

In my opinion, SQ and WQ have the best location for dorms. I guess Martha and the other all-female dorms have great locations too but I’m focusing on South Quad right now haha. It’s great for football games because you’re on the way. The IM Building is really close, and you’re near the Greek life on State and Hill Streets. You’re also close to the South State and South U business areas too. The libraries are close (Law Lib is 2 minutes away) and class is also obviously really close! I’ve regularly left my room at 1:04 and made it to my 1:10 class on time (Michigan time!) while walking leisurely. The MLB (oh how I hateeee the MLB) is <10 min away while walking fast and the Chem Building/Dennison is about 7-8 min away.

Umm the people change every year but in general they’re good. I was pleasantly surprised how social the floors were! It’s not Markley-esque but still, people like to have fun. Everybody is nice and respectful. It’s quiet enough to do your homework because honors kids are focused on their studies and people are very willing to help. It’s chill. I think it’s a good balance because on the weekdays it’s conducive to studying and on the weekends a lot of people go out too. You definitely won’t have trouble making friends

I have pretty much written an entire novel but it should definitely be very helpful! So detailed haha. If there’s something I managed to gloss over, just ask!

^Thanks! Has anyone else lived there?

Thank you !! I’m in honors too lol. Ans by community style bathrooms what do you mean? Are they clean and stuff? I’m justa big neat freak and scared about sharing showers and stuff with a lot of people … It just disturbs me lol.

I know that South Quad has two practice rooms. Does anyone know if there is a piano available, too? If not, we will have to get a keyboard for our son.

collegebound890, community style bathroom means that there is one bathroom for the entire floor and you share the showers, sinks and toilets with everyone on the floor. They have separate ones for boys and girls. The custodial staff cleans them. It can be better than having a private bath you share with a few other students because the custodial staff does not clean those and they can get messy and disgusting if no one cleans them.

Yes, there’s at least one piano available downstairs. You have to get a key to unlock the door (I think? My roommate occasionally would go play the piano) but I don’t think it’s very hard to gain access.

And yeah, that’s pretty much what shared bathrooms are. There’s actually 2 girls bathrooms and 2 boys bathrooms per floor. You actually only have access to the one on your half of the floor, depending on whether or not you live on the east or west side of the building. They’re cleaned everyday. If you happen to wake up while they’re being cleaned, you can get yourself into any bathroom on your half of the building. For instance, I had to take showers one floor above me occasionally because they were being cleaned at that moment, but it’s not a big deal.
